Could A Simple Paint Job Help Save the World?

According to an article on Yahoo! Green today, Steven Chu, US Secretary of Energy, says the Obama administration has a simple solution in the battle against climate change: painting flat roofs with an energy reflecting white paint. There are also plans for this effort to be extended to our highways and parking lots to help all that asphalt and blacktop reflect the sun as well. If successful, the outcome would be equivalent to removing every car in the entire world from the road for 11 years! Although the energy secretary warned the paint is in no way a cure all, it's certainly a simple step in the right direction.

I think this is wonderful news, and I would love to see it happen. Honestly, I've wondered why there's never been a move to do it sooner. Some office buildings try to combat greenhouse gasses by planting gardens on their roofs, but that can be quite costly. This seems like a cheap and easy to maintain alternative. There are even colors other than white that can be used for those who find white too harsh on the eyes.

How do you feel about changing the color of America's buildings, homes, and highways to combat global warming? Would you paint your roof to help keep your home cooler while helping the earth? What do you think?

It sounds good. Something needs to be done to stop global warming and if this does work, it would show many people that a change for the good can happen. If I owned a home, I would paint the roof white, to help stop global warming.

    Have a good day. :o)

We already have some people here in Texas that paint their roof tops white to keep their homes cooled in the summer.

I would love to see a more nationwide effort.

    Thank you for posting this.

O K got a question for you. What about the chemicals released when the paint is applied and then when the paint gets hot? Scientists have done earth core samples and it shows that the earth goes through cooling and heating trends naturally. Not a dang thing we can do it is just hype to waste money of the taxpayers.Big business gets richer on peoples fears and our government adds fuel to the fire. Thanks for letting me voice my opinion. Hi All,

Thanks for the posts. Randy, yes, the earth goes through heating and cooling stages, and was doing so long before we started polluting it. However, there's no disputing that what humans are doing to the earth is destroying it. Just use your own common sense. Haven't you ever watched the heat rise off of black top or asphalt? It's like torture to be trapped in a car on a hot highway. If you read the article, the paint colors other than white are specially treated.

The scientist interviewed for the article is a noble laureate. I'll trust him over you.
