Coupons are cool again

Goodness knows we like to debate whether we really can save money using coupons here on Shine. But whether you're a coupon pro or you only cut out a few coupons for the products you always buy, you've got lots of company. Coupon use is definitely up for the first time since the early 1990s, thanks ever so much to a these short-on-money-and-jobs times.

Coupon use peaked in 1992, at the end of that recession, when 7.9 billion coupons were redeemed, The New York Times reports. Coupon use dropped pretty dramatically, to 2.6 billion, in 2008 and stayed pretty steady through 2008. But as the economy took a dive and we consumers grew more worried and careful about money, coupons have become very popular once again, with redemptions climbing 10 percent at the end of 2008 and 23 percent in the first half of this year. About 3 billion coupons are expected to be redeemed this year.

Coupons are so in vogue that "coupon," like so many other nouns these days, is becoming a verb. "The households that tend to not coupon as much are all couponing significantly more this year versus last year,” Neil Heffernan, senior vice president and general manager for the research company Knowledge Networks/PDI, told the Times. The researchers found that coupon use is up across the board with people of all incomes. .

You'd think digital coupons would have a lot to do with the resurgence of coupons, but while coupon codes on the Web and via cell phones are definitely being used more (up 25 percent over a year ago), paper coupons still rule. Sites like redplum.com and coupons.com provide coupons you can print and clip online, bridging the gap for those of who are online more and more but still like to do some old-fashioned clipping and saving. (For online shopping paperless coupon savings, try sites like retailmenot.com and couponcabin.com.)

Are you clipping more coupons these days, and do they really help you save money? How do you make sure to use coupons for healthy items and for items you would buy even if you didn't have a coupon?

Itend to use coupons for large amounts, on items I already use.

I'm brand-loyal. But when I get the coupon fever, all bets are off -- Then I get obsessed with just how much money the receipt says I saved, even though I've probably purchased things I don'r really need and most likely will never buy again.

How can coupons NOT save money? I don't understand. It's money off. A penny not spent is a penny saved. That's always how I've looked at it.

I'm a college student who cooks her own food, and I rarely use coupons. I just can't keep up with any extra little pieces of paper lying around. I do, however, shop at stores that have rewards programs or discounts if you have your bonus card, and I definitely hit those sales, regardless of brand, if it's something I'm going to buy.

i so use copuons, i have 3 kids and i ususally use only the coupons i get stuff for on a regular anyways. but if theres a coupon for something that is more expensive than what i normally get or i can't get the store brand usually cheaper i won't use it and the discount doesn't make it cheaper than theres no savings if you can find a better price for the same thing. so i use my coupons the smart way.

be aware of the prices for things sometimes the bigger item will be the same price or very close to the smaller item. this goes for food items and reg stuff. Like i went to target last weekend and was getting stuff for goody bags- they had the crayons a Crayola 24 pack for a $0.25, cool but the Crayola 8 pack was $0.89. So how does that make sense, of course i got all the 24 packs who wouldn't. this happened to us also at Smart N final we were getting weiners for the party and the small pack of like 30 was 9.89 and then they have a 50 pack for 4.99. So tell me how does that make sense?

What a silly question. Are they COOL again? Every smart woman knows that it's COOL to save money, whether it's a "trend" or not.

All those 2 for $5 deals where you need 1 but buy 2...gotcha.

We use coupons, but only on items we will be buying. We found our bill drop when we stopped buying things just because we had a coupon. And we still take advantage of 2 for 5 deals and buy only 1. Most of the time, they don't tell you that you MUST buy multiples for the discount.

It certainly doesn't hurt to use coups, but use them when you need to will give you the most savings.

The occasional coupon really won't be any good, you have to find the right coupons, and you have to get a lot of them.

I use coupons along with this cash that i got from here: http://www.mediancs.com/rd_p?p=191614&t=9534&a=25081-scash&gift=25081

I always use coupons on things I will buy anyway. Here's how to save really big with coupons,,, check local ads, when items are on sale and you have a coupon,,,, that's when you really save. For example,,, Cover Girl LashBlast Mascara, my current favorite. Had a $1.00 off coupon, normally this is about $10.00. Went on sale for $5.00 and I used my coupon. Saved $6.00 on one item,,,, use the coupon when item is on sale,, Sometimes items are actually FREE with coupon....
