“Dancing with the Stars” resurrects more washed-up celebrities

One of America's favorite reality programs, "Dancing with the Stars" will be returning with its 9th season on September 21. More interesting than the format of the program itself is seeing which washed-up or barely famous celebrities the show chooses to compete for the title of dancing queen (or king).

Why are these stars always so random? One reason is more famous and desirable stars may have more pressing gigs on their plate. Secondly, these celebs can make a lot of money on this show! They are guaranteed $200,000 a season no matter how well they do. The winning team wins an additional $100,000, second place winners get $75,000, and third place finishers are awarded $50,000. Time to get out those dancing shoes!

Here's how the new contestants break down this season:

The singers
Mya - singer, also appeared in "Chicago"
Macy Gray - Grammy award winning singer
Aaron Carter - singer/rapper, brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter
Donny Osmond - singer, brother of "DWTS" Season 5 contestant Marie Osmond
Kelly Osbourne - singer, daughter of Ozzy, reality star

The actors
Melissa Joan Hart - '90s actress, candy store owner
Debi Mazar - actress, friend of Madonna
Ashley Hamilton - comedian, actor, son of "DWTS" Season 2 contestant George Hamilton,  ex-husband of Shannen Doherty

The athletes
Chuck Liddell - UFC Hall of Fame fighter known as The Iceman
Louie Vito - professional snowboarder
Natalie Coughlin - swimmer, U.S. Olympic medalist and record holder
Michael Irvin - former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, NFL Hall of Famer
Mark Dacascos
- martial artist and the Chairman of "Iron Chef America"

The beauties

Joanna Krupa - swimsuit model
Kathy Ireland
- model, entrepreneur

The WTF contestant of the series
Tom DeLay - former House Majority Leader known as “The Hammer”

Tom Delay? Seriously? Well, he hasn't been doing much in politics ever since his high profile legal problems forced him to step down. "As it turns out, Tom DeLay likes to do a bit of the Two Step," says "DWTS" executive producer Conrad Green. "He likes dancing with his wife. His daughter is a country dancing champion, I believe. He actually really enjoys dancing. Now I don’t know whether that translates into him being the next Mario Lopez on the dance floor, but I think he’s gonna come into it with a big smile on his face and probably surprise a lot of people cause he’s gonna embrace it so much.”

What do you think of the Season 9 contestants and who will you be rooting for? [EW]

LOL!! Sorry! I don't watch DWTS anymore and thank goodness. I think I lost my giddiness for the show around season 4 or so.

It was only a matter of time before Donny Osmond became a part of the cast...

Come on now, isn't this what "celebrity" shows are all about? Getting your faded star back into some kind of limelight?

Now whether or not I will watch it.... I doubt it. I am not big on reality tv or contests. Never really have been.

Ever since Cloris Leachman stayed on for weeks, I have not watched this show very much. This woman was a disgrace to herself and to the show. Disgusting. She was throwing herself to the judges.

Among the many brain dead offerings on TV--NEVER watched the show and don't intend to. This and others inclyding the Kar-trash-ians, Hoochie Mamas Next Door, etc scrape the bottom of the barrel. Garbage.

I think the fans should select who will be dancing on each show.
