Lush Carpet
Sometimes just a simple carpet treatment can really complete a room. “Feet always feel pampered on a plush floor like this,” says Jamie Drake, who designed this ultra-feminine bedroom. Wall-to-wall carpeting tends to be confined to neutral colors, but not in Drake’s designs. Here he extends the room’s purple palette with a cut-pile wool floor treatment in a soft lavender hue. Stained Stripes
An artful stain can achieve the same look as paint, but its transparency allows the wood’s natural grains to show through. Here, light and dark stained stripes set on the diagonal are truly unique and stunning.
Here, a cheeky mosaic poses as a high-style area rug. Hawley McLean Haleblian’s faux zebra skin rug mosaic is fabricated by hand with leftover cartons of crushed black and white ceramic tiles. With a chalk outline as her guide, the striped coat was assembled and set in adhesive. The mix of glossy and dull pieces gives an impressive depth to the faux rug.
Contemporary Shag
A shag rug adds instant texture to a room. In this
Wisconsin space it gives a mostly-grey palette a new dimension.
