Is your personality compatible with your career?

It’s been a while since I took a good old-fashioned online quiz, so I was a little too excited when I came across a simplified version of the Myers-Briggs personality test over at SavvySugar. If you’re not familiar, Myers-Briggs is based on the theories of Carl Jung, and it’s often used by college career counselors to help students pick a major or occupation that plays to their strengths.

Naturally, I was too busy ... um ... studying in college to spend time with a career counselor or take a Myers-Briggs test. Luckily, I managed to pick a career I pretty much love. Still, it was interesting to see what jobs Carl Jung & Co. would have picked for me.

Curious?

Click here to take the free, simplified version of the Myers-Briggs test. It has 72 yes or no questions on one screen; the real test has hundreds. (And it ain’t free.)

When you’re done, click “Score It!” and you’ll get a four-letter personality type. Mine is ISFJ, or Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging. (Judging? Who, me? No! But you should probably run a brush through your hair.)

After that, click on your “type description.” ISFJs are Guardian-Protectors, which means:

This is the Guardian least likely to seek positions of leadership since they may feel uncomfortable in the limelight. They are often seen as the people who do whatever is necessary to keep things running smoothly. They do their best to prevent problems. They can be attracted to fields in medicine, education or social service. In business, positions that combine some type of social interface with time alone are best for them.

Interesting. I do hate the limelight. (I was the fastest bride down the aisle ever.) And I like to keep everyone’s lives running smoothly, even if it means taking on more work than I should. I don’t work in any of the fields the mentioned, but I do volunteer in an elementary school. And “time alone”? Hello, story of my stay-at-home life!

Now it’s your turn! Take the test. (You can do it in less than five minutes.) Then tell me your personality type, whether the test right, and if you chose the right career path.

I came out ENFP: Extrovert, iNtuitive, Feeling, Perceiving...I have to say it's pretty spot on. I do think that maybe I'm not as extroverted as it says, but that's due to the way the questions are worded...I also followed the links that show careers you would be good at and they were all my strengths - writing, journalism, teaching, counseling...do they match my current job? No, I fell into an accounting position 7 years ago...still here, still miserable...

INFJ - I am sitting at my job in a mental health agency thinking about the classes that I have to take tonight for my Masters in Mental Health Counseling so I can become an elementary Student Assistance Counselor. Could it be any more accurate?

ESTJ - only somewhat accurate. I am hardworking, responsible and industrious, but I question everything... Even as a child I did. Apparently this personality type would indicate I a model student, eager to please and followed directions to a tee without questioning why. As a student, I questioned my teachers directions, assignments and general authority regularly. Only a few teachers met my standards. Their work I did without question or issue. Otherwise, I ignored assignments or even vocally disputed them. While I have learned to pick my battles as an adult, I still tend to question and debate what may seem like small details to others.

Yes, I take on a lot of responsibility, I am hardworking, involved and industrious, but the rest is laughable... Than again, I was only 1% in the first 2 categories and 12% in the 3rd. The only seemingly definitive thing is that I'm judging. I'm not sure how I should take that...
