It took a lot to get here, but Americans are saving: Are you spending less and saving more?

It took a lot to get us here, but we Americans are saving more. The personal savings rate increased to 5.7 percent--the highest in nearly 14 years, the Commerce Department reports. Consumers have been cutting back on spending, and here's why: the U.S. unemployment rate continues to rise. It's at 8.9 percent in April, the highest in 25 years, so even if you've got a job in this shaky job market you may be worried it's not secure.

Are you saving more these past few months (if you are able to save at all)? More importantly, do you think your savings and spending habits have been changed for good as a result of the economic downturn and the all we have learned about the perils of overusing credit cards this past year?

I have been saving quite a bit each week. Hopefully I will have enough in the next few months for a new/used car or at least a really healthy down payment on one. On the weekends I bartend and/or cocktail I save all of my change & put what ever ones I have left over in savings. Last month I saved over $100 without even working for it. Who knows how much I'll have saved up within a year.

My savings got pretty depleted when my last relationship ended, but I am starting to build it back up. I've also been making noticeable progress towards paying off credit card debt and am making a conscious effort to not use them. I am pretty optimistic...

I have made an extra effort to save in any way possible. I look for the items that are on sale, cut coupons, I go online and compare prices before I make a purchase. I am able to save a little more than I was able to in the past.

i am also doing a lot of savings right now...i have a good job right now but want to become an entrepreneur say in 2yrs' time, so i'm saving a lot from my salary because if i dont save enough money, it means i will have to take a loan, which will entail paying interest. i've put some of my savings in fixed deposit so that i wont have access to it until i'm ready for my business and it will also yield good interest for me and this will add to my savings.

I write a check to my savings account each month. (It comes up as a bill on Quicken). If I thought of it as savings, it would just sit in my checking account and I would spend it. But now that I write it as a bill to my savings account, it always gets deposited. If I don't write out my check, Quicken keep alerting me that a bill is due or overdue! So I definitely write out that check until next months bill reminder.

Wow I think I'm the only one that isn't saving. It's so hard for me to save money, and it's starting to frustrate me! I get paid weekly, a whopping $300-$400 on average. By the middle of the week it's like I'm flat broke! I don't know what to do. Maybe I should stop spending money like a mad woman. Maybe. I think that I'm going to make myself send money to my savings, so that I don't spend that extra cash.

Do you guys know anything about making extra cash online??? Please tell me yes............
