Jackson memorial costs LA $1.4 million it doesn't have to spend. Was it worth it?

In the end, 31.1 million people watched the Michael Jackson memorial on TV, more than the 29 million who tuned in to the American Idol finale but less than the 38 million who watched President Barack Obama's inauguration. A full accounting of the Internet and worldwide TV audience is not yet available, so you know millions more were watching at some point in the day.

Not so many showed up in person, however, which is a good thing for the financially strapped city of Los Angeles. Gearing up for 250,000 fans outside the Staples Center and Forest Lawn cemetery, the city estimated it would cost $4 million to pay mostly for overtime for police to secure the area. About 1,000 fans showed up outside, and the cost instead turned out to be $1.4 million for police pay, traffic control, and other services. But the debt-ridden city still doesn't have that reduced amount lying around to pay the overtime salaries. The state of California is writing IOUs, Los Angeles is a half-billion dollars in debt and facing layoffs, so look for the city to be trying to legally force other groups, including AEG Live, the owner-operator of the Staples Center where the memorial was held, to foot the bill.

Fans have been asked to chip in by donating via a Web page, but tech troubles with the site have hampered donations, which so far total about $17,000.

We are still reeling from what a huge media phenom the memorial turned out to be, not to mention some of the more unsettling moments from the event. But it seems paying for the televised memorial will go on long after the adoring Staples Center crowd has dispersed. Was it worth it?

Read on for another look at the money spent on the memorial and financial lessons we can take away from MJ's troubled life.

Personally, I don't think so... But I know that others might think so. Personally, I find funerals that are so uber public to be disrespectful to the family, especially if it's not a state funeral.

    Illionskiss,

Exactly what did MJ contribute to society?

    What did Elvis contribute?

    What did Anna Nicole contribute?

What did Mother Theresa contribute? oh..........do you get it now?

This is the problem with society.......so busy putting musicians, sports, actors up on a pedastole..........

Too bad society........is too busy admiring money and fame.....

    He was a strange person

As they place him in a GOLD PLATED CASKET.........

How many people.....live on that amount alone?

Michael Jackson contibuted a lot to society. Think about how much revenue the state gained from travellers coming to this memorial. I believe the state should pay. The memorial was for his fans to honour him one last time. He already contributed millions to society!!! May he rest in peace!!!!

I live in LA, and I'm a huge MJ fan, but no, the city shouldn't have had to pay for this. Donations from his fan club, donations from his family (all of whom are millionairs mind you) etc etc should have taken care of the bill. It's not a tax payer duty especially when teachers in our state are being laid off left and right and the governor has now started issuing IOU's to tax payers. I also had beef with the recent NBA celebration for the Lakers, again HUGE Lakers fan, but come on...it was a $2 million bill that the city flipped half of. With the cost of tickets to go to a game etc. the Lakers organization could have paid that without blinking an eye as a Thank You to the loyal fans.

One thing to remember though in both cases, especially the MJ funeral, the city was flooded with visitors which economically stimulates our funds and local economists said the $1.4 million LA shelled out was made up in travel, hotel and food surrounding the event.

NOBODY...Actually, Michael Jackson was also one of the biggest humanitarian celebrity and Mother Theresa ALSO CONTRIBUTED a lot IN SOCIETY...YOU SHOULD DEF DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING SUCH IGNORANT COMMENTS...Although I may not be a huge MJ fan, I give credit to whom credit is due. So saying that he contributed nothing in society is just out right foolish...

Anyway, I do agree with those who said that the family, like all other families, should pay the bill. People have mouths to feed and bills to pay. I just hope the people in LA won't eventually have to suffer for this by getting laid off or raising city taxes to pull the city out of their debt:( Janet Jackson spend enough money on personal expenses. She should be more than able to chip in a nice portion....
