Jackson memorial costs LA $1.4 million it doesn't have to spend. Was it worth it?

In the end, 31.1 million people watched the Michael Jackson memorial on TV, more than the 29 million who tuned in to the American Idol finale but less than the 38 million who watched President Barack Obama's inauguration. A full accounting of the Internet and worldwide TV audience is not yet available, so you know millions more were watching at some point in the day.

Not so many showed up in person, however, which is a good thing for the financially strapped city of Los Angeles. Gearing up for 250,000 fans outside the Staples Center and Forest Lawn cemetery, the city estimated it would cost $4 million to pay mostly for overtime for police to secure the area. About 1,000 fans showed up outside, and the cost instead turned out to be $1.4 million for police pay, traffic control, and other services. But the debt-ridden city still doesn't have that reduced amount lying around to pay the overtime salaries. The state of California is writing IOUs, Los Angeles is a half-billion dollars in debt and facing layoffs, so look for the city to be trying to legally force other groups, including AEG Live, the owner-operator of the Staples Center where the memorial was held, to foot the bill.

Fans have been asked to chip in by donating via a Web page, but tech troubles with the site have hampered donations, which so far total about $17,000.

We are still reeling from what a huge media phenom the memorial turned out to be, not to mention some of the more unsettling moments from the event. But it seems paying for the televised memorial will go on long after the adoring Staples Center crowd has dispersed. Was it worth it?

Read on for another look at the money spent on the memorial and financial lessons we can take away from MJ's troubled life.

I live in CA, down in Orange County and I don't believe that the tax paying citizens of California should pay for this. Yes the people coming into the state to see the memorial brought money, had to eat and sleep somewhere but it didn't really matter. California is billions of dollars in the hole, let alone LA which is millions of dollars in the red. Who should pay for it? The family. Take it from whatever is left over after the credit vultures take their share from MJ's estate.

My idea of this whole thing was: in our personal lives, we loose our loved ones, we pay for their funeral expenses, the state/city doesn't aide in these charges. We arrange memorial's for those most important to us and we foot the bill. I do think that our families that have passed are far more important to us than MJ was. Yet... we paid the expense of having a nice service for our loved ones. If we would choose to have a huge memorial for our pass'd family member, we would expect to pay for it. Therefore, whom ever planned this huge entertaining memorial should foot the bill! Any expenses that are due to the memorial should be billed to the party that planned this event!!! As we pay for our own with no help from our cities!

I think the LA councils are on crack. Are they F*cking stupid or just play dumb? Don't they realize the entire state are the worst financial turmoil of the country? Don't they realize how poor these fans are? 1.4M for the funeral. The rest of jackson should be able to pay for it. If not, ask the damn Lakers, ask the Hollywood starts to contribute. I am sure 1.4M is spare change for them. And for those who contributed, you are F*cking stupid too. I';m sure you loved MJ and have some change to spare, but I still you are f*cking stupid. This F*cking LA city already spent 2M for Lakers parade, this money should be paid by the Lakers, not the city in the first place. F*ck all of the dumb-A$$ DlckHeads in the LA Councils.

Where are all his Hollywood friends? Why did his family go to such lengths if he was $500 million in debt? Also, why can't Janet raise his kids? Seems her career is at a standstill and not too long ago she was deeply in love with Jermaine DuPree and ready to settle down. Hot mess! The brothers better release some music because the goose that laid the golden egg has died.

This clown was a freak, a pervert and a disgrace to his race. A black man that wanted to be white and possibly female. Society is so warped that they have made this clown a "god" and worship him. This is pitiful. According to the media, nothing else has happened in the world or locally since this dude died and that is a shame. Have the state pay for this fiasco, what the heck are they thinking? Each state doesn't pay for anybody else's funeral and nobody else get the "god" treatment as this dude or should I say, dudette has. Bill the family, they have the money. They sure ain't poor black folk. Whatever happened to Ed McMahon, or Farrah? Never heard about them because this weirdo died.

If this nation would be this much attention to the real GOD, we wouldn't be is the sewer like we presently are. GOD would bless this nation again but it is because of garbage like this, we have put the real GOD on the shelf and forgot that we should only worship HIM and not weirdo's like MJ.

No wonder the state of California is in debt. Duh... What were you thinking? Everywhere else people have to usually (no matter how small the cost) pay in advance for less extravagant services. Wasn't anyone in charge of the costs/payments? And who was responsible? Who did the state "think" was going to pay? I don't get it?

I feel for those "citizens" of that state who are trying to make ends meet. Those who are less fortunate than others. Those who are barely making it and now, because of the state, have to pay for an event they had no control over. Just doesn't seem fair or just. California and whomever was in charge of assigning "all" those who want a paycheck for services rendered, better come forward and explain how "this" happened. And why? Crazy.

I loved MJs' music - but give me a break, let the family pay for all that BS. California shame on you, and Arnold where were you? Oh yeah, sorry I forgot 'muscles from Brussels" wants to be popular.

I have a suggestion for the governor of CA, why not give the same education to all the children in your state like you would give your own children? America gave you a break, now we want pay back.
