Lampshade makeover

Need a fresh look? Swapping even one or two of your old lampshades might just do the trick. A pop of pattern, color, or texture is always a tired room’s best boost—and when illuminated, these decorating basics pack twice the punch. It can be hard to find stores that sell shades on their own (beyond the blank ivory and cream varieties); so with that in mind, we’ve scoured our best sources and rounded up our favorite lampshades now on the market.

Beaded Blooms

(Above) This vibrant shade from Anthropologie features honey-colored beads that hang from linen stitched with wool. Bold wildflower shapes in vibrant citrus colors make it a real eye-catcher.

Wooden Wonders

Real wood veneers in either cherry or walnut make these rustic shades unique. We love the way the light glows between the fine wood grains.

Roost Wood Veneer Lamp Shades, $160 for small (9.5˝h x 14˝d), $180 for large (10˝h x 16˝d); VelocityArtandDesign.com

Fluttering Accents

Appliquéd with gorgeous felt cutouts, this off-white shade has gone from basic to bold. And in classic black and white, the butterfly motif is far from cutesy.

Graphic Flowers

Florals can feel fuddy but sketched in an unexpected black and brown, they feel fresh again. The white of the paper dominates the lamp, allowing for a clear bright light.

Graphic Flower Paper Lamp Shade (10˝h x 14˝ across the bottom x 12˝ across the top), $30; LampsPlus.com
