yesterday, all I could think of were the many times I had flown out
of LaGuardia airport after attending one business meeting or the
other. Typically, once in the plane my mind is focused on
getting back to my kids and I barely pay attention to the flight
attendants as they review the safety information. I bet
many of the passengers on US Airways Flight 1549 to Charlotte,
North Carolina were in the same situation, thinking about all the
things they needed to do once the plane landed. They just
had no idea the plane was going to land as quickly as it did just a
few minutes after takeoff and in the Hudson River nonetheless.
Thankfully this plane crash ended as perfectly as a plane crash can
with everyone surviving and only minor injuries reported.

I can't imagine what was going through
the minds of the passengers and flight crew as they realized what
was happening. What goes through one's mind when
you face an encounter with your mortality? I think my
mind would go straight to my boys and how sad it is that they will
grow up without me and I won't get a chance to see them
become men. Or will my whole life flash before my eyes as the
saying goes? Who knows?

I
would like to talk to the working moms that may have been on the
plane for business reasons, especially those who may be struggling
with mommy guilt. An incident like this can shake you to
your core and make you ponder the reason for your
existence. It can also trigger emotional, albeit
illogical thoughts. For any working mom on that plane who
is wondering whether she is unnecessarily risking her life for her
job given that she has kids - I say, you could very well have been
on that plane on your way to or from vacation. And to those who
wonder how I could be painting such an outlandish scenario, I say,
I've been there and I have talked to many many women who
have been there too.
