My bad-*ss vegetable garden: Meet my veggie babies
partner
Remember last year how
I had my Minions build me some tricked-out
raised beds for a vegetable garden? I'll bet everyone has been
wondering "Whatever happened to The Germinatrix's jacked-up vegetable
beds?" Well, I had planned on planting a whole winter garden, only to
be thwarted by the complete lack of sun on that part of my backyard
during the fallow time of year. I'm going to trim the sycamores before
planting my winter garden this fall -- I'm sure I'll get better results.
So this summer is officially the first active season of my
Bad-Ass
Vegetable Garden. I'm planting it intensively -- meaning I'm going to be
stuffing plants in every available inch of bare soil. So far, this is
what I've planted:
Green Globe Artichokes (3)
Sweet Basil (6)
Lemon Basil (3)
Fennel (3)
Armenian Cucumbers (2)
Japanese Eggplant (6)
Alpine Strawberries (12)
Sallvia Berggarten (2)
Salvia purpurescens (2)
Lemon Thyme (3)
Silver Thyme (3)
Garlic Chives (6)
Marjoram (2)
Rosemary Blue Spires (2)
Serrano Peppers (6)
Sunburst Squash (1)
Tomatoes:
Champion (2)
Big Beef (1)
Heatmaster (1)
Early Girl (1)
Juliette (1)
Consuloto Genovese (1)
Mystery Tomato (1) (I lost the tag)
Lots of mesclun and arugula
Green Beans, Blue Lake (11)
Sugar Snap Peas (6) - it's late in the season for these, but I'm going for it anyway...
All these and I'm not finished! There is still room ...
I am a novice at vegetable gardening -- I grew them for a few years when
I first started gardening, but then I became infatuated with perennials
and drought tolerants and growing food fell by the wayside. What
brought me back to the idea of vegetable gardening was when I read
Gayla Trail's book "You Grow Girl",
and subsequently started reading her blog of the same name. Her passion
really spoke to me, and I realized I needed to re-connect with my
gardening roots (Oh no! Not a pun!). I'm not expecting miracles, but I
am hoping that I might be able to put some food on the table later on
this summer. And of course, it has to look good. Just wait 'til I get
my fruit trees in! I'll keep you all updated on the progress of the
beds, and if something goes south, I promise I'll show that to you,
too. Cause I'm keepin' it real!
