Oh, the cupcakes that could have been saved

...if I had only known this trick for packing them: An empty egg carton makes a perfect carrying case for party- or picnic-bound mini cupcakes. It's one of those so-obvious- you're-embarrassed-you-haven't-been- doing-it-all-along ideas, but I'm blaming my oversight on the fact that I have an inexplicable and long-standing aversion to eating eggs, so I probably wouldn't have a 12-pack carton on hand when I needed it, anyway. Thanks to Shelterrific's Mary T. for sharing her discovery (and to Seattle bakery/coffee shop Coffee to a Tea With Sugar for exhibiting such genius in the first place). The last several birthday parties I've baked for could've been so different...

salmonella and other bacteria can most certainly be on the outside of the shell! Its a really dumb idea to put food in something that was in contact with raw eggs. That would almost be the same as letting your kid lick a raw egg.

I'm thinking a the carton could be "sanitized" by a few seconds heat in the microwave in case any salmonella are clinging to the carton.

Sanitizing the egg carton would be just a waste of time and energy. Why not just invest in a reusable cupcake container. No risk of any bacterial contamination and no worries. It's true that Salmonella thrives or are usually found inside the egg but is there a way you can tell if the carton had a cracked egg? Besides, it is just plain unsanitary. Why would you take the risk?

The egg container could have been contaminated by raw eggs, maybe from eggs that were broken within that container, or in the grocery store, or in the huge box during transport. I wouldn't risk it, especially since pretty frosted cupcakes attract little vulnerable kids.

As an alternative, maybe check out the camping aisle at Walmart or Target. There are egg containers there meant to be used on the go. Or, spray the egg carton with food sanitizer first?

Great, just make sure none of the eggs broke in the container because it could cause salmonella.
