Party Favorites: How-to-set-the-table Cloth

Formal table setting skills may have gone the way of, well, eating formal dinners in one's own home, but sometimes you get that urge to cook a big meal and invite a bunch of friends over, and you want to have all the forks in the right place. A handy tool for those of us (ahem) who have no idea where the oyster fork goes is Dutch designer/photographer Elise Rijnberg's tongue-in-cheek embroidered-diagram tablecloth. (It's unclear from her site whether the tablecloth is in production or available for purchase, but it's still fun to look at!) [via Notcot via Style Files]

What about you? Do you ever do formal table settings, or are you just lucky if your family is actually sitting down at the table and eating together? And do you even own all of these utensils? Comment away.

The only times I've ever eaten like this were during my early sorority days, once or twice during law school and once or twice a year at work functions now.

When I have parties at home (like earlier this evening) I'm pretty low key...The table settings are awesome...just not that formal.

Most of the sit-down dinners I serve can make it just fine with the dinner knife and fork, teaspoon, and a salad &/or dessert fork. It's always good to know though where to place each item, including the glasses/stemware, napkin, etc. Another rule to remember is "use only those utensils and items you need for the foods you are serving". That's probably the reason my guests have never seen an oyster fork in my settting.
