Postage poll: Does the higher price of stamps matter to you?
editor
The price of stamps is up to
44 cents apiece, beginning this week. And, even though the U.S.
Postal Service has been advertising its 42-cent Forever Stamps as a
way to lock in your postage pricing for awhile, at least,
lots of people were taken by surprise by the price hike.
The increase in the price of a first-class mail
stamp will represent an additional $3 to the average household over
the course of the year, according to Postmaster General John
Potter. That doesnt' seem like a lot, for sure, but is
that because we are mailing so much less than we used to?
We're wondering: Is the postage-price hike a big deal
to you? Or are you going to the Post Office less and less because
you're paying your bills online and sending ecards and using
social networks to keep in touch with friends and
family?

Go back and ask what the price increase on "flat" mail pieces and or "oversize" pieces will be. You'll get a shock. Every time they increase postage it's across the board. They hide the unreasonably high increases by saying stamps are only going up a couple pennies. Over the past three years, a flat piece of mail that once cost my business 63 cents to mail, jumped to $1 in two increases. With this increase, it will be over $1 per piece - how much more I don't know because the business is closing.

It is a big deal for me,. My husband is in the Military and most of the time he's not allowed to call home. Writing letters back and fourth is the only way i keep in constant contact with him.

I can understand the rising costs of stamps, but what gets me is that you have to add additional postage to the stamps you've already purchased. I think you should be able to use up the stamps that were already printed and paid for without adding 2 additional 1 cent stamps.

Buy FOREVER stamps -
You don't have to add the additional 1 or 2 cents if you are using Forever stamps - they can be used no matter what the cost is. That's why the post office sells them; they want you to spend a lot of money buying a ton of cheaper stamps you can use until they run out. Hence, if you have 1,000 forever stamps you can use them when the price is 41, 42, 45, 48, 58, 68, 99 or whatever the cost currently. You don't need to add more postage to your letter as long as you have a FOREVER stamp.

What difference does it matter how we feel. They ARE going to go up on the price of stamps and everything else. There is nothing that any of us can do about it, but make noise.

Who buys stamps on a regular basis????? When I need one, and I really mean ONE, it's a gigantic deal to even figure out where the nearest post office is. I pay bills online, send ecards, and of course email everyone.

I only purchase stamps from my bank ATM at holidays when I send the old fashioned geeting cards to my grandparents who do not even know what an ecard or how to view one. I pay all my bills online, correspond by phone, text message or email and rarely send anything by the good old USPS. But I think that is the major issue with the rising cost of stamps, the less mail people send the less they have in their budget to pay their employees. So every year we buy fewer stamps they have the same expenses with less money coming in so they raise the cost of stamps. Guess we will all just get use to this.

I still have a ton of forever stamps that I bought before the last stamp increase from last summer for wedding invites and thank you letters.

I only buy stamps maybe 4-5 times per year. This month was more because I had to send out thank you cards, but really, it's not a big deal to me. What's a few cents here and there? And yes, I do all my bill paying (mostly) online, send e-mails, etc. an e-card does not replace a real card though, so for birthdays and other stuff, I make sure a real cards goes in the mail.
