Returning to work or career transitioning? Check out these resources!

By Carol Fishman Cohen

I’d like to share with you some excellent relauncher resources I have come across in the past few months.  They range from the instructive to the inspirational, to the idea-generating.

Let’s start with “instructive.” Interview Mastery is an in-depth guide to interviewing skills and strategies created by Michael Neece.  I met Michael recently and was intrigued by both his personal story (he’s also a founder of Pongo Resume ) and his Interview Mastery product. I checked out the CD ($49.95) version by listening to it while driving around in my van (there is also an online version for $29.95), and found it to be a useful tool.

I really like how Neece dissects the interview process into 41 tracks, so if there is a part of the process with which you are already familiar, you can skip it and go right to the tracks that matter most to you. For relaunchers, those include “Preparing Intellectually – Research You,” “Preparing Intellectually – Research Company”, “You’re Overqualified”, “Handling the Salary Question” and more.  And if you want a refresher on every aspect of the process, you can listen to the whole thing.

The other thing I like is that Neece doesn’t just describe what you should be thinking about and doing; he gives an actual role playing example of what your answers should sound like in the interview itself.   He should know, as he sat on the other side of the table as head of recruiting for Hewlett Packard, IDG and other Fortune 100 companies before creating Interview Mastery.

When you order Interview Mastery, you will receive the weekly newsletter which usually focuses on one particular interview issue and gives advice about it.  For more info and to order, here’s the direct link:   http://www.interviewmastery.com/orders.cfm

OK, next is “inspirational.”  A few days ago, the Wall Street Journal’s Sue Shellenbarger wrote her Work & Family column on return to work programs for women reentering science, engineering and technical (SET) fields .  Among the programs mentioned was a government funded effort in the U.K.  This organization is called the U.K. Resource Centre for Women in SET.  They just published an excellent report profiling case histories of women who have returned to work in SET fields.  I found it particularly inspiring.  Here’s the link: http://tinyurl.com/af7qmc.

Finally “idea-generating.” The (Un)happy Lawyer: A Roadmap to Finding Meaningful Work Outside of the Law by Monica Parker is directed at lawyers, but is useful for anyone who realizes s/he is on the wrong career path and wants to make a change (whether or not the person has taken a career break along the way).  The first person, interactive “roadmap,” interspersed with real “case studies” of career transitioners and the author’s candid recounting of her own experiences, is a great approach to mid-life career assessment.
