Sarah Palin explains herself, but we're still confused

Sarah Palin donned fishing waders and invited lots of reporters along a family fishing excursion to explain her stunning decision to quit the Alaska governorship. Only, after all the interviews filmed in time for the morning news shows were done, a clear-cut explanation remained elusive, and lots of questions remained.

The most popular political parlor game right now is to deconstruct Palin's Independence Day eve announcement to decipher whether there is some grand plan behind her rambling front-lawn press conference. So in these back-to-back interviews, dubbed a "giant photo opportunity" by NBC's Andrea Mitchell, you'd think some clarity would emerge. It didn't in a big way--but maybe that's part of her strategy???

Here's what she did say: Knowing she was not going to run for re-election to a second term as Alaska's governor, Palin decided that another year of battling her adversaries, and fighting costly legal battles as more ethics violations are levied against her administration, would not be good for the state's coffers or for her family. So she decided to turn over the state to her lieutenant governor and go on her way--to what, besides the book she has a contract to write and speaking engagements, she wouldn't say.

Can you imagine yourself running for president? Mitchell asked her. "I don't know what the future holds," she answered. "Can't predict what the next fish run's gonna look like, much less the next couple of years."

"You haven't finished the job, some would say," Mitchell said, and Palin responded, curtly: "You're not listening to me as to why I wouldn't be able to finish that final year in office without it costing the state millions of dollars and countless hours of wasted time...." Her personal debt, she told Mitchell, is in the $500,000 range because of legal fees. But that is not the only reason she is leaving office now. Just one of the many reasons that added up to her surprise move to bail on a quarter of her elected term.

"I said before ... 'You know, politically speaking, if I die, I die. So be it,'" she said in more than one interview, meaning if her one elected term cut short cuts her political options, well, it's still worth it.

You get the sense that there's more bubbling beneath the surface of her decision to quit her job while trying to make it seem like a real quitter would put her head down, slog it out, and fulfill the four-year term she was elected to serve. But, maybe the fact that no one -- advisers, supporters, leaders in her party -- seemed to be informed about this decision and ready to talk about what's next means this may be an in-the-moment decision designed to move Palin and her family off the political hot seat and into another kind of spotlight. But which one?

Do you think there's real strategy behind this abrupt career move, or an attempt to stem legal fees and bad press in favor of spending time earning her book advance and speaking fees?

Here's the interview with NBC's Andrea Mitchell:

I'm finding it hard to get what the big deal is about her anyway. She probably got tired of everything coming down on her and the added attention it was putting on her family. Can't blame her for wanting to back away from that, even though it's her own fault. There's no way she would've come close to being elected to the presidency, let alone AK governor again with how she's conducted herself.

I mean, I am not a fan of Republican candidates or silver spoon Republicans as it is but I thought McCain would be a good choice (that is until he really opened his mouth on some issues and decided on Palin as a running mate, not to mention him leaving the campaign trail to help fix the economic crisis, when he was clueless about what to do in the first place. But I digress.). What did she bring to the table anyway? Just because you appear to be "every woman", which I really hope she isn't, that doesn't mean you know what the hell you're doing when it comes to an elected position. Come one, she was really considered an asset?

Sounds like more will come out of these probes than is being let on so far. As far as her kids, well they have nothing to do with anything and how they live their lives is for her to deal with. And I don't think it's for public consumption because if anyone else had someone telling them how to raise their kids or that their kids were failures or anything of the sort, they be ready to kill someone.

To the person who said that the media wasn't going after the Obama kids, what kind of moron are you? Their pre-pubescent and not having kids underage! But trust me, the first chance they get, they'll dig up something. If you don't think the media is out there with their shovels, think again.

I'm not a Palin fan...don't find her genuine, and don't like her politics. But if she decides to run for higher office, I respect and applaud her decision. I would like my politicians focused...how much good does a sitting governor do travelling the country doing prep work for a Presidential Run? What about a Senator who is absent for dozens of votes? If you want to run for higher office, give up your current seat.

I hope she replaces Rush Limbaugh...he's getting truly dangerous. In 2002, you were anti American if you disagreed with the President...now he's hinting at overthrow of America as a good thing. Scary talk going on there...

Why is anyone surprised she quit as governor? She didn't even bother to finish college...maybe if we ignore her she'll go away? (one can hope that anyway)

^^^ Hmm... yet someone else that halfasses their research... :/ She graduated with a bachelors in mass communications in May 1987 from the University of Idaho... Granted not the most prestigious degree and a monkey literally could get one... but if you are going to smear someone at least do it with facts instead of fiction...

I can't remember anyone in politics recently who has been abused by the media like she has. It truly doesn't matter what she does, it draws press. She had a kid linked to the gov't hack into her email, and that is just the tip of the iceburg. None of us can imagine what she has been put thru, all while trying to do right by her family and catching flack for that, too. Paparazzi are one thing, but being attacked by the media and the gov't is something we can't fathom. It's like a bad movie.

I could care less why she left; her leaving before her job was up speaks volumes to her character and I thank God everyday that her and McCain were not elected.

Join in the conversation! What do you think of this story?

Pleezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, no more about Sarah Palin. Bottom line, she was used as a icon for John...The election was over quite some time ago. Nice gal I am sure...but quite frankly, her major role in life is to be a good Wife, Mother and Grandma and Daughter to her own family. It is obvious that her charismatic personality was acquired via a Religious Belief System, a personal decision we all have the right to accept as a personal gift from the HIGHER AUTHORITY. To entangle herself into the ways of the world will not behoove her personal relationship with God. The best avenue for Sarah and others alike her is to live her life as an example for others to follow. I believe Sarah's response to her resignation regarding her pursuit per a HIGHER CALLING was just that, no other reason but to best serve the Father. Sarah is an average gal like THE REST OF US. And for being initially selected as John's running mate only proves the Senator is just an average guy. Lets all move on and pursue other avenues of solution to bring PEACE LOVE and HAPPINESS into our WORLD. AMEN!

Republicans are blaming Alaska's Transparency Laws and access to public information for Palin's legal woes and ultimate resignation. Has no one realized that if she hadn't DONE anything, there wouldn't be anything to find? She is certainly not the only politician with past transgressions, she just put herself in the spotlight and ultimately got caught. She needs to face up to what she did, make it right, and then go on to phase 2, (or is it 7?) or whatever of her life. Let's all quit feeling sorry for someone who got caught!!

So what if she is leaving a job, due to the media and alot of libs, she can no longer be effective. She wasn't the best choice for vice president but I don't understand the deep hatred people have against her and her family. The comments I read here are disturbing because of the level of hate and intolerance. Most people have contradicitions in their lives. Teenagers, well if you have never raised one you have no right to comment or critize her or anyone else, until you live thru that experience you can't have any idea what it like.
