Sarah Palin: What the heck happened?

While most of us were hanging out  in our shorts, eating things cooked on a grill, and drinking perhaps more than we should, the most famous lady in Alaska, Sarah Palin, was resigning her position as governor of that fair and chilly state. She has 18 months remaining on this, her first term, but will leave by the end of the month.

From a podium in Wasilla, in a rambling, at times awkward and nonsensical speech, Palin explained that she needed to quit. She blamed it on the "politics of destruction" and suggested she could do a better job on a larger stage. She complained about the complacency of most lame duck governors and said:

"Life is too short to compromise time and resources… it may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: 'Sit down and shut up,' but that’s the worthless, easy path; that’s a quitter’s way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and 'go with the flow'. Nah, only dead fish 'go with the flow'."

Huh?

So by quitting her job Sarah Palin is not taking the "quitter's way"?

Anyway. By announcing her news on the Friday of a holiday weekend, Palin likely hoped for mild media coverage. However, Independence Day didn't get in the way of reporters and pundits espousing a slew of theories for the "real " reason the governor abandoned her job. These are the big three:

She wants out of politics
On Friday, MSNBC reporter Andrea Mitchell said, according to sources close to Palin, "She [Palin] is out of politics, period. She is fed up with politics. She doesn't like her life. She feels that she needs to raise her family. She's sick of the commute from Wasilla to the capital. And she really does not want to run for higher office, that this is not a case where she is stepping down in order to clear the way for a presidential run. In fact, she has told some of her biggest backers in the national Republican Party that they are free to choose other candidates for 2012."

There's a big scandal
Alaska-based reporter-blogger Shannyn Moore suggests something more nefarious. Moore says talk of a criminal investigation into Palin has been circulating in Alaska for weeks, and that Friday's resignation was "damage control for news to come out later." The supposed scandal involves a rumor that when she was mayor of Wasilla, Palin assigned contractors the 2003 construction of the Wasilla Sports Complex in return for work on building her home. The Palin camp vehemently denies this.

She's planning her 2012 presidential run
Writer Bill Kristol theorizes: "She's freeing herself from the duties of the governorship. Now she can do her book, give speeches, travel the country and the world, campaign for others, meet people, get more educated on the issues - and without being criticized for neglecting her duties in Alaska...And haven't conservatives been lamenting the lack of a national leader? Well, now she'll try to be that."

Hmmm. This is the way I see it: Regardless of all of these rumors, Palin was hired to do a job. She chose to run, she campaigned, she was elected by the people, and she signed on for four years. She quit just over halfway through not because she couldn't do the work anymore, not even because she had been hired to serve Americans in another capacity. No, Sarah Palin quit because she couldn't stick it out and fulfill her obligation. She didn't finish the job she'd started because it didn't suit her anymore. And for all her talk about regular, hard-working Americans, this seems very un-hard-working American--lazy and opportunistic and just plain irresponsible--to me.

Federal indictments coming down the pike, that's what happened.

You know, the same thing could be said for Obama. He didn't finish out his term in the Senate, nobody bashed him for not finishing his job.

I don't like Palin, but come on. You're putting one standard on her, and another on everyone else.

There is a verse in the Bible that says deal with the log in your own eye before removing the speck out of others. Liberal authors and media wont spend a moment to cover the multitude of scandals that surround many of the democratic leadership but will hammer misinformation about conservative leaders like Sarah Palin to death. It really gets old, really the government should step in and regulate the media, oh wait they already do... free speech as long as the whitehouse approves.

I hear you, but Obama at least had another job...as president. He didn't quit to go on a self-promotional speaking/book tour which is what I bet happens with this situation next.

Honestly, I don't see why anyone living outside of AK would care. A lot of people disliked her. I for one, don't really care. There could be more than just her stated reasons for living. But telling by her comment, she sounds frusterated with the way things are done in the state government and the larger scale is federal, maybe she feels like she could do more for our country on a larger scale where she can have the power to pull some strings to get things done right. Who knows!?!

But I agree w/Dr. Eevol, Obama didn't finish his senate term and yet he's president. No one bashed him for it! Get over it! She has a right to resign.

actually her nonsensical speech smacks of forced resignation. who knows why. maybe she's sick of the politics with politics and didn't make nice with someone important. whatever happened, Alaska, and this country, is the better for it.

One of two things, something she didn’t want to surface was about to (all politicians both left and right wing have some skeletons in the closet)

    Or

She was sick of it all and was ran out by a liberal media to picked her to pieces during a presidential campaign during which her personal life was ripped apart. Issues (or should I say non issues) like her daughter getting pregnant and how much she spent on a dress were played in the news non-stop for weeks; all the while her adversaries smoking habits and accepting of personal gifts (like a 2 million dollar house) from a lobbyist being convicted of illegal government payoffs.

Seems to me that she never really governed as Governor. She just kind of hung out, used the power of the office to go after ex family members, used her staff as built in babysitters, and flowed with the river as VP candidate. I have no idea what direction she's planning on taking now but as long as it's off my tv I don't care.

While Obama does have another job as president, I am sure the people of IL would rather have had him resign to run a political campaign than to give only a half effort as Senator. As a resident of Colorado I can tell you that if Gov. Ritter decided to run for president I would be asking for his resignation. Each state has it's own issues and here in CO it is the unemployment rate and an energy debate. I want someone who is HERE not out running for office. As a mother of three I would also like to say that if she did do this because she felt it best for her family then GOOD for her she is putting her family first. She might be governor but she was MOM first and if more women viewed the job they started when they had a family as atleast as important as the outside job maybe we wouldn't be seeing such an increase in school violence and girls bullying each other. I am not saying all working women ignore their responsiblities but as a work from home mom I see so many of my daughters friends asking me for advice simply because their mom is working late AGAIN and they don't want to burden her. Just my rambling thoughts.
