Self-employed dilemma: Finding (affordable) health insurance

If you've ever been self-employed without the luxury of a working spouse or partner who has health insurance benefits, then you know how maddening searching for affordable insurance while worrying you'll get sick before you find it can be.

After hearing from so many self-employed, uninsured workers on her Shifting Careers blog, The New York Times' Marci Alboher put together some helpful resources and advice in this "Finding Health Insurance If You Are Self-Employed" piece.

If you've been there, you'll recognize one woman's terror of going without insurance until she finally finds insurance she can afford, only for the premiums to take a sudden jump.

Here are a few of the resources Alboher highlights:

healthinsuranceinfo.net -- This Georgetown University Health Policy Institute provides a Consumer Guide for Getting and Keeping Health Insurance for each state and Washington, D.C. Click on your state on the map on the site and you'll be able to download the guide for your state.

ehealthinsurance.com -- an online health insurance-finding tool that gets good marks by users.

advocacyforpatients.org -- Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illness, a Connecticut-based group that helps patients with chronic illnesses and insurance problems.

If you're self-employed, tell us how you handle the insurance dilemma. Is there any good answer?
