Serving Dish: Outdoor lights

It's the dreariest day here in New York—windy rain mixed with gray skies—so I thought I'd leave you with some light. These are a few of my favorite picks for outdoor lights for the season.

The Candela Luau light is a design by Vessel that i adore: It's a portable, dimmable LED lantern that stays illuminated for 10 hours, so it's perfect for outdoor parties (or during a blackout!). I especially love that the price has gone down by about $50 now that OXO is carrying this modern lantern.

Smith & Hawken is always a reliable source for outdoor string lights. Their globe-shaped cafe lights are a classic. If I had an overhang above a deck or patio, I'd create a canopy of light by stringing up rows and rows of these cafe lights (which also come in blue).

For a traditional candle lantern that has some heft, I love these gray iron lanterns, also by Smith & Hawken. They remind me of a vintage garden find you'd score at some New England flea market. I like the idea of putting the large one on your patio table as a rustic centerpiece light (rather than the expected spot on your garden path.) It sounds like the weather will clear up over the weekend. Hope you have a great one!

Refreshing, wasn't it, to not see Jenny Sanford standing silently beside her fake-Appalachian-Trail-hiking, adulterous husband? And, then, to see her personally hand her statement to reporters.
