Why is it that when I see McCain on television I have the urge to change the channel? He's on CNN right now and its painful. I guess I feel bad for the old guy. He's coughing, he's stumbling over his words all the while acting like he has something new to say. I know he wants something new to say, you can see it in his eyes: "oh god, why didn't I come up with Obama's plan first? Why did I listen to my party members? Maybe if I flail my rigid body a little more, we'll all believe what I'm saying..."
He's talking about the economy. That's nice. Wasn't he the guy who said it was good thing to end the cap on what the electric companies could charge? Or was it one of his friends? Did he not say before the market took a dive that the working person was a-ok?
Working people are not ok. We haven't been ok for a while now. Regular old Americans have been suffering for a few years now with the cost of gas, heating and cooling of homes, and food. It's not news to regular people that the economy sucks eggs. Unfortunately, it wasn't until the wealthy got slammed by our inability to pay debt (because, um, we are broke after paying for gas, utilities and food) that the GOP took serious notice.
(Before you think I'm biased, which might be true, I remember the striking thing about Obama was that he talked about us regular people being broke and that needing to change throughout his campaign.)
Poor McCain. He doesn't think we should raise taxes on the wealthy or fund socialist-like programs that take care of the needy. Well, before you get your panties in a twist over taxes, lets review:
You probably aren't making $250,000 a year. You may like to pretend you are, but few of us really do. I can count on one hand how many people I know who really make that much money. If you work for a small business, assuming what you understand what qualifies as a small business (most people don't), chances are they aren't making that much either. If you do make that much, then you can take 5% tax increase and your fellow Americans will thank you.
What happens when the middle class disappears? What happens when staples like rice, bread, milk, butter, flour and eggs cost half of the average grocery budget? What happens when you can't afford gas to travel to work or fuel to heat your home? What happens when we stop paying for programs that benefit the super poor, leaving them to their own devices?
Afterall, no one wants to share the wealth, right? That's bad. If the poor don't have bread, then let them eat cake, right?
Not taking care of your middle to lower class inspires people to make nasty devices like the guillotine. It doesn't take long for people to get fed up with the system when they are hungry and cold. You have to take care of the masses so that they don't take care of you.
So why is it that sharing the wealth is evil all the sudden? The opposite of that is what? Hoarding the wealth? I bet a lot of wealthy people really like that! Do I like it? As a mid-middle class girl according to last years tax return (whom even after bringing in a higher income this past year will most likely be reclassified as a low-middle class gal) sees it, no.
I don't think its evil or scary to share the wealth. I think its dangerous not to share that wealth. I want to be able to buy bread. I want to heat my home. I want to be able to drive my car. I want those very basics things to stay within my reach. I'm really tired of prices being higher every time I do my grocery shopping.
Do we really want to freeze community enriching services to give everyone a tax cut? Or do we want those who have help out the have nots and soon to be have nots? Do we want to get nothing for nothing or something for something?
