Whitney Sander , an architect based in Culver City, California, designed this tree house-like home for his sister.
The 150-foot beech trees surrounding the small site near Wilmington, Delaware, inspired the architect to think vertically: Framed in wood and clad in long, vertical planks of cedar, the house stands a full 40 feet.
Whitney divided the interior into three stories, placing the living spaces on the top two floors, and storage, laundry, and a parking garage on the first. The double-height ceilings and windows on the second floor, as well an outdoor balcony, also contribute to the lofty, outdoor-indoor feel. The roof is accessible by a steel stairway that spirals upward from the ground.
