Speak for Yourself: How often do you clean out your pantry?

Yesterday, Apartment Therapy blogged Sunset magazine's story "7 organizing tips that really work," and although a lot of the advice, while wonderful and sound, is stuff you can more or less figure out with common sense, I did stop short at the instructions for organizing/cleaning out the pantry. Wait, what? I'll admit, fridge-clean-out day happens with some frequency at my house, as I have a nasty habit of not managing to eat all my perishables before they, um, perish, but it's possible that I have never in my life (save when moving apartments, which actually used to happen pretty often, too) cleaned out my "pantry"—or whatever served as a pantry at the time. Am I alone here? Does anyone else have years-old packages of Minute Rice (or the last forgotten packets of ramen from your undergrad days) tucked in the back corners of the cabinet? If so, set aside 15 minutes of your day and let's do this together.

1. First, pull all the food out onto the counter where you can see it. (This also means you get to see all the little left-behind stuff at the back of the pantry shelves and clean it out.)

2. Then, take Sunset's advice and sort the food into 3 piles: "keep (have intention to do something with it); giveaway (canned or packaged goods that have not exceeded their expiration dates, but that you have no intention to use in the near future); and toss or compost (items that have exceeded expiration dates, or opened goods that you have no intention to use)." I like the idea of getting serious about what you're actually going to use, and taking the rest of the still-good stuff to a soup kitchen or shelter. Just because I fell out of love with Shake 'N' Bake doesn't mean someone else shouldn't eat it! And composting! Easy to forget. If you don't have a compost heap in your yard (or a yard at all), there may be a community-based compost site in your area where you can drop off your expired foods. Ask around at a farmer's market or community garden near you—they might just be thrilled to have your way-old leftovers.

I just did it today. I was compelled for some reason. I found 10 boxes of sugar-free jello.

Once a month. That way, it helps us make sure we don't buy unnecessary items if they've been lagging in the back of the shelf.

Wow, you guys are good! Now I'm a little embarrassed...Maybe I just don't cook at home enough to have that many goods to sort through.

FYI: Never leave open pancake mix in your pantry. Once open, store in your refridgerator. I can't remember the exact reason why you should, but something happens to it that if left too long in the pantry, you can get very sick from eating it.

I clean out my pantry once every three months. It's not exact but something along those lines. I find that I have to throw away a bunch of stuff (snacks, cereals, etc.) I bought for the kids that they never finished. I figured either they expire by then or have been opened too long. Now if I could only do that with the rest of the house!

So when i was done cleaning out the pantry i ate a can soup!
