Taking an un-sick sick day can save your sanity

My son’s birthday party is tomorrow. I tend to do “old skool” parties. You know, the type we had as kids. No jumpy houses, no pony rides, no entertainers, no frills. My son’s party will be at the park down the street. The highlight this year will be a piñata.

Frills or not, birthday parties are a lot to manage on top everything else I am managing right now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to plan my son’s birthday party. It’s the shopping, the organizing, the set-up, and my least favorite, the clean-up that always seem to leave me in a big ball of stress by the end of the party.

To get everything ready, I am taking a sick day today. My company offers unlimited sick days and I rarely take one. I’m much more inclined to work from home during any illness and stay on top of my work. Earlier this year, I lost my voice for 3 days but continued worked out of the comfort of my bed while starting a high profile project. I rarely let illness slow me down.

So how can this birthday party bring me to a dead stop?

I want the day to be a special one for my son. And I don’t want to be up until midnight or up at 6am trying to get everything ready. Parties are supposed to be fun. I’d like to get to enjoy some of that fun and not be worried about if we have enough juice boxes.

That leads me back to the un-sick sick day. Today, I’m unofficially sick. With my blackberry on at all times, I’ll still be able to mange any crisis that pops up. But you won’t find me at the office or at home. I’ll be at the craft store, the party store, the discount supply store. I’ll be ordering the 25 pizzas (did I mention we have a large extended family). I’ll be digging through my recipe book for the punch recipe that we all love but I can never remember the easy ingredients.

I’ll be getting everything organized, prepped, and ready to go for my son’s big day. With everything out of the way today, I’ll be able to live in the moment during the party tomorrow. I’m not only baking the cake but I’ll be enjoying it too!

I may not be physically sick but taking this day sure is good for my stress level and my sanity.

There are days you simply cannot go to work but you are not sick. Funerals. A sick child. Furniture is being delivered. A dead dog one morning.( that one really brought me to my knees). Planning a party is a good reason. Most companies now offer personal days as well... and it's a good thing.

In an old district I worked in, you could not take off at all except for medical emergency during the last two weeks of school. I needed to go to my daughter's graduation in another state and they thought that was unacceptable! So, the day before, I started feeling achy and then called in sick the morning of.

I completely agree! We know when we are getting to that point of too much stress... and its not good for us or our job! I call it a mental health day, a day to catch up with the things that fall between the cracks due to lack of time and energy. These days are blessings. People need to realize that life is very short and we need to spend our lives as happy as possible, and sometimes that means taking a break!

I had a sick day the other month - and it's so freeing to be able to accomplish things during the week. I got the car worked on, my daughter to the doctors, the dog pills picked up, a really nice dinner cooking since I had time, and........... a nap!

It's funny, the exact same things that I did when I didn't work and were just "chores", were now calmly dealt with accomplishments!

This is why I like combined time off. I just take a day. I don't have state why.

Since this is not a mental health day, it should be a pre-planned vacation day. My bosses are very flexible. When a big event comes up that takes up my entire weekend, I request the following Monday off since I know I won't be worth anything that day anyway. Or if I need a prep day prior to the event. But if there is a day you are overwhelmed with life and work and need a day to recuperate and do nothing, that would be a mental health day--a sick day.

I have combined time and I love it. I just call and say "Hey, I am not coming in today...see you tomorrow" and there are no questions asked. Lovely.

I have paid sick and paid vacation. I've only taken 1 sick day and that was to get all my doctor's appointment out of the way. I have a feel that I'll probably end up taking a "sick day" sometime this year, but only for the soul purpose of having "me time." Sometimes you can get stressed out or there's too much going on that you have to take off a day of work. I would hate to use if for that reason, but sometimes you just can't help it. You know, your boss and everyone else in the office has probably done the same thing, too, so don't stress it.

How can you get soo stressed out when you are doing it so simply? Any how, Our kids should always come before a job. Just dont bring you pics from the party to work cuz they will be asking how did you throw such a great party when you were feeling so icky the day before?!?!

I too have taken the occasional sick day; and then my son broke his arm that same day!! We basically have Personal Time Off; now, I always request random days throughout the summer for pool time, shopping, etc....I love the freedom!

Refreshing, wasn't it, to not see Jenny Sanford standing silently beside her fake-Appalachian-Trail-hiking, adulterous husband? And, then, to see her personally hand her statement to reporters.
