The New Neutrals: Think Beyond White Walls

Think white walls will make your room feel clean and open.  Think again.  When I see white walls, 99 percent of the time it makes me think the homeowners were just too lazy to paint.  If you're renting an apartment, white walls are completely acceptable.  If you get the OK from your landlord to paint the walls a color of your choosing, seize the opportunity!  White walls seem too sterile and institutional.  Plus, they get dirty, and begin to look dingy quickly.

Painting walls is really a simple project.  With a few supplies from the home improvement store, you can completely change the feeling of a room in just a couple hours.  When choosing a new wall color, think outside the box.  You've already opened up the idea of change, so why not venture out of your comfort zone a little farther.

Tan or beige walls are a very popular neutral wall paint color.  There is nothing wrong with tan walls, except that it's a little boring.  If you're scared of color, go with tan.  It's a HUGE improvement over white.

But, if you're feeling like an independent spirit, try a different neutral.  Here are a couple interesting ideas for neutral wall paint colors:

Dove gray
Light blue
Sage green
Butter cream yellow

These colors will completely change the feeling of your room.  They are still very neutral, and for around $30 and 2 hours, you will have all your friends and neighbors thinking you're a creative genius!
