Timeless Tabletop Displays

Over the many years and countless evolutions of my home entertaining style, there are a few things that I never stray from in my own decorating and event planning.  For accessories, runners, giant serving pieces and pearlized flatware are a must.

In lieu of a tablecloth, a rough hewn and sturdy wood table with a runner down the center is where I like to begin. No linen or mats are necessary, just napkins and perhaps colored glassware. The runner anchors the table and dictates what the rest of the table decor will consist of. Whether we embellish the settings and turn it into a fanciful version of Tuscany or keep it simple and homespun, it’s always chic.

I love giant trumpet-shaped vases like this one from Shopping the Globe. They are slim on the bottom so they don’t obscure anyone’s view across the table but are tall and wide enough on top to create a dramatic punch.

Though the setup  is more ornate for this festive fortieth birthday party, the runner and wood table are still my anchor for the tabletop display. Note the burgundy bees wax candles and the pearlized handles on the tableware—two of my favorites.
I’ve been in the market for a very glitzy/bling runner and was hitting a wall. Just when I thought I would have to ask my tablecloth maker to produce something for me, I found this at Barney’s. It’s a Kim Seybert design, fully beaded—and I can’t wait to put some equally ornate china and glassware around it.
