'Unreality TV' distorts job duties and pay

ABC/Ugly Betty

ABC/Ugly Betty

When I began my career in journalism, I secretly hoped to find a newsroom that resembled the one on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

The camaraderie with coworkers, the breaking-news excitement, and the pleasant communal atmosphere seemed so attractive. And though I knew nothing about the show was real, I still longed for a similar sense of fun and purpose.

Today I wonder how many budding police detectives feel the same about "The Closer" or magazine editors about "Ugly Betty."

PayScale.com has done some interesting research on how these and other popular shows distort the realities (often unflattering) of certain careers. My favorite is the analysis of "Ugly Betty," where junior staffers at the fashion mag Mode live lifestyles that aren't possible on real starting salaries in New York .

Also, PayScale took a fascinating look at "Mad Men" and how the fictional salaries of the various characters stack up against today's advertising professionals.

Of course we don't watch sitcoms for guidance in our professional lives, but who can help wishing? If you want TV with accuracy about the working world, try "Dirty Jobs."

It is funny i remember when movies like tv was considered to be a flight of fancy - a time you would use to escape have a good time with friends. When did it matter if the Betty lives appove her means? Its tv not parenting and finances 101 - To all those who love Ungly Betty for her.

I dunno about that... I work in science. It's a LOT like Dexter's Lab. There's all sorts of secret rooms with gigantic computers in them and mutant mice that if we let them out of their cages, they could probably take over the world. And then there's the lab coat and the purple nitrile gloves I get to wear along with my science safety glasses that looks so much like Dexter's. The halls are nice and shiny and have that secret sciency stuff is going on in here kinda feel. Then there's the annoying people like Dexter's sister DeeDee who are just IDIOTS trying to always destroy your experiments and who really have no place in a laboratory.

I once worked for a small magazine and made so little money, the part-time cleaning staff made more money than I did. It was nothing like tv and I had so few friends there that no one really noticed when I left.

Meh, I think ALL tv shows portray unrealistic lifestyles. From Ugly Betty to WWF it's all a bunch of romanticized, dramatized hooey.

Speaking of lab work, my lab looks nothing like dexter's.

I am a graphic designer student but whenever I watch House MD or Grey's Anatomy I SO MUCH wish to be a doctor...although in my country the docs are underpaid, overworked and sometimes not even respected by the patients. Still. This sweet TV series lie fools me everytime. :P
