User post: How do you maximize limited space in an apartment?

I'm moving into a new apartment in three weeks, when I get married. My fiance is living in the apartment now. At the present time, most of his stuff is still in boxes (he just moved in two weeks ago). I'm occasionally moving some of my things over, but not too much.

As we combine all of our belongings, I find we are running out of space. I've still got lots of editing of my belongings to do, but we don't have much in the way of storage for all our things we don't use very often.

We have a few obstacles: books, guitars, keyboard, video games, many framed pictures, my craft supplies, etc. My big problem is the apartment we are moving into has a policy about hanging things on the wall. You can hang it, as long as it has a small nail hole.

This automatically rules out putting up shelves on the wall for any of my books or craft supplies. No shelf in the world can be held up by a small nail. This means pictures are the only thing they want you stick up on the walls.

I'd really hate to just line the wall with endless book cases and shelving units. I even have to get the managements approval for curtain rods. All the windows are naked at the moment which doesn't help with the monstrous heat.

What are some good suggestions for maximizing space for all our belongings? What organizational things could I do that still make the space functional, yet warm and like a home?

get rid of what you can;t afford to keep cause that's the reality in a cramped apartment or give some of it away, at the most. If you have the extra added income you can always rent a storage unit near-by and then you'll have an extra place for you necessaries that you can;t install in your 19 by 20 studio

think height (using the wall higher up instead of just closer to the floor). Invest in seats that have storage inside. Get closet organizers. Declutter and get rid of things you really don't need or use. Get under the bed organizers. Buy space bags to compact the size of the stuff you need to store (like seasonal clothes and bedding).

I also am moving into a small apartment. I plan on leaving half of my clothes at my parents house... because i have ALOT of clothes and my boyfriend wont let me take them all! so i will switch them seasonly.

Also, those bags that you can vaccum out the air would fit good under a bed. i plan on putting my dresser in my closet to save on wall space.

there are all kinds of storage things for closets. add a shelf across the bottom, add rods below the higer one to fit more clothes

use storage things that hang on doors for shoes, accessories, or even one with the multi pockets for your craft supplies.

put all music on your computer or ipod, cds and cases just take up space and get scratched.

get organizers for put all your movies in then just store the cases somewhere else or trash them.

Get some Tall (8 inch or more) Bed Lifts (or Bed Risers) to lift your bed higher. Then put cube storage under the bed on the sides that show. You can put coordinating wicker baskets, canvas baskets, tin trays, etc. in the cubes for a lot of storage. On the side that doesn't show - slide your suitcases (you can fill them with off season clothes, etc.), a rolling file, and maybe some Space Bags.

OK - completely disregard the rules about putting stuff on the walls. Just spackle up the holes you make before you move out. That's what I did. Also - every piece of furniture should also be storage. My coffee table is a trunk, where I keep all my table linens and I have a bench at the end of the bed where I keep all sheets and blankets. Off seadon clothes go under the bed in those flat boxes on wheels. I have a cool end table that is also my craft cabinet. You could have your boyfriend build a floor to ceiling bookcase in one area to hold books cd's and dvds, and also pictures.

If you haven't bought coffee table or end tables yet. Then if and when you choose to, buy ones that are more like trunks. You can use them to store books, crafts, anything you want. Plus, you can go to a storage store or shop on line for some ideas. Perhaps the customer service desk has a catalog you can take home and browse thru. spend some time, actually looking around your parents house or friends and family. Look at different ways they organize things, or even ask them what are their best tricks that they use.

Well i am living alone but have made certain changes to adjust in a house which has two rooms yet is very small for a single person .

    1. Putting LCD on wall

    2. Purchasing Cum Bed Sofa and folding dining table with two chairs(can be used for studying,as a

iron table etc). The best part is that chair goes inside the dinging table after folding.Similarly

coffee table can be purchased which has few stool two/three of four inside them.Nesting tables is

    also a good option

    3. Not buying unnecessary showpieces although i like them but have only artificial flowers.I only

purchased two wall hangings one in each room that also within my budget.

one more thing i did not compromised with necessary storage like i bought a 345 liters fridge, 6.5 kg washing machine and planning for 32" or 37" microwave.

Every month i clean my clutter and make sure all my items are displayed properly i am able to use them easily when i want.

Buy "In the corner pieces." I have a hutch that is made to fit in the corner. It is where your two walls come together. We have alot of spaces on the entertainment center to place stuff in. Think of your college days where a bedside table was the three storage containes. You can also by an "In the corner book case" or a ladder book case. By an ottoman that you open up for storage. Several of the pieces can be found at Big Lots,Target or CraigsList for cheap.

You guys dont need two sets of dishes, towels and everything else so box up a set and give it to a women's shelter.
