User post: New puppy horror

So here is my story...

We decided that we wanted to add to our family recently.  We have a one year old male chihuahua and decided that we would like to get him a friend.  We picked out a spunky runt on the internet.  Being advertised as a 5 week old puppy and was fairly inexpensive.  We of course had to wait at least three weeks to get her.  So we sent a deposit and started to prepare.  We named her Daisy and bought her a kennel, a bed, new toys, and puppy food.  We were receiving pictures every week until D-day.  I was quickly becoming attached to her even though I had not seen her yet.  A few days before we were going to pick her up, the breeder phoned me to inform me that she had a bit of hypoglycemia (common in toy breeds) so she wanted to keep her for at least another week to make sure she is healthy.  That was fine with me, I knew that hypoglycemia was something that we needed to be aware of so I was prepared for that.  The following week we drove an hour and a half to pick her up.  When we saw her, she was just as spunky and cute as we expected, she seemed perfect!  We got her home, played and went to bed.  The next day is when it all happened.  She refused to eat, no matter what I did she would not eat.  I talked to my vet and they said she was probably a bit depressed from the change and would eat when she was hungry, just to make sure she had water and a supplement called Nutri-stat, she would start eating soon.  So I did just that.  That night however she just fell over, I recognized the signs of hypoglycemia, so I rubbed Karo syrup on her gums and kept her warm, but she would not come out of it, I had to rush her to the ER.  Sure enough her sugar was dangerously low, and they discovered that she had a parasite called coccidia.  This disturbing, but tolerable because it could be fixed with meds.  So we went home and I stayed up all night force feeding her with a syringe.  Making a long story a little shorter, we ended up at the vet on the next day, in the ER again the next morning, and then the vet again later that day.  They finally had to put a cathater in her femur, and she had to stay overnight.  This was yesterday, today she is still at the vets, coming around but still not eating.  She has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia, coccidia, and pneumonia brought on by the coccidia, she also had a seizure.

Looking at the paperwork I received from the breeder, it all came into focus.  She had altered the vet health certificate, the vaccination dates didn't match up, and my two vets think she is only 5 weeks old as of today, if that.  Luckily Florida has a Lemon Law for puppies.  We will be using that to our advantage, and are doing everything we can to keep her alive, to a certain extent, we don't think it is fair for her if she lives but doesn't have a good quality of life.

So in conclusion, please, please, know the laws in your state and do the research before you get a puppy, I learned a hard expensive lesson.  I tend to be a very gullible person, so I made a mistake, but one I will never make again.  I have become very attached to Daisy so I am pulling for her.

Thank you for listening to my story.

UPDATE:

For those of you who are not reading all the comments, Daisy did pass away last Thursday, the pnemonia got her and she stopped breathing.  Thank you everyone for your kind comments.  I know we will be able to shut this place down, its just a matter of time.

How about you adopt a dog instead of buy a dog from a unscrupulous breeder? I don't really feel bad for you, there are a ton of chihuahua's in the shelters that are begging to go to a new home. But YOU decided to buy a dog for a lot of money. I hope the dog pulls through, but it is people like you that are keeping backyard breeders in business.

Wow, that's really tough! It's shady "breeders" like the one you dealt with that give breeders a bad rap. A decent breeder is working to improve the breed of the dog, and is extremely concerned with the dog's quality of life, not worried about making a quick buck. It's a shame that you had to go through such a horrible experience, I wish you guys both better luck in the future with picking out family additions and hope Daisy pulls through OK. :)

I agree with Melissa. There are more bad breeders than there are good ones out there. Adoption is always a better and more sound option.

We did adopt our first dog, we are not horrible people. We fell in love with her, and even though we got her from a breeder does not mean that those dogs don't deserve a good home as well. And we did not pay "a lot of money", she was actually cheaper than adopting, that is why we opted to get her. I guess we got what we paid for. Your entitled to your opinion, but there is no need to be ugly about it.

    Hi,

have you consulted an attorney or reported this to your local authorities? If they gave you false papers and sold a sick dog then you could file suit or at least press charges.

Sounds like a puppy mill dog. Many years ago we bought a dog from a pet store that was notorious for puppy mill dogs but we didn't know. He had a form of canine epilepsy and they did nothing to reimburse medical expenses. Our dog lived a reasonably healthy 10 years but died of a violent seizure, and that store was shut down due to several complaints.

If they are licenced breeders they should be investigated and have their licence revoked.
