Alright, here we are. The starting point. I'm fast
approaching a very important crossroads (a very BUSY crossroads) in
my life, as so many others are. It's a very common
story. After almost 12 yrs. of work, my company is throwing
me out with the bathwater. See? Like I said, a common
theme these days.
Ok, take stock. Who am I and what can I do? I'm
overweight (so modeling is out) and over-the-hill (fast picking up
speed!). Single mom. I have a high school education,
but that was eleventy-five yrs. ago. My transcripts are
probably on microfiche and I wouldn't be surprised if half of
my old teachers were being spoon-fed by now.
What experience do I have? After school I worked in the
convenience store industry for about 15 yrs., before going to
my present job at the airport. So I can run a cash register,
type really fast, and I know how to flag out and load a
plane.
The convenience store industry is pretty well tied up around here
now, most are owned by foreign mom and pops, who only hire
family. I've always been a good typist, but that's
the only secretarial skill I have. Well, okay I've been
told I have a good phone voice so I could maybe be a
receptionist. Actually, guys tell me I have a
"great" phone voice, but the job they mean is
illegal in many states. I wouldn't be able to do it
without laughing anyways.
What's left? I can flag a plane in and out, make
reservations, sell tickets, load and unload cargo and
passengers. That translates to what, driving a
bus? I can see me pointing to the exits with that
2-fingered salute, explaining to the passengers there is no floor
level lighting to illuminate the way to the exits. There are
6-7 emergency exits on a bus though, so maybe the airline industry
could make a note.
I could write a self-help blog on flying. How to avoid dry
airplane skin, what to wear while traveling, how to pack.
What you can and can't take through the security
checkpoint. Do they really touch your underwear when they
search your bags (they might!) and what to do if you left your keys
in your checked bag and it didn't make the flight (you
sit). It might be the next bestseller.
Who knows what will come next on this voyage of insecurity?
Stay tuned.
