What Do You Splurge and Save On?

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_d1lQCEZU-J0/SlLJakxeizI/AAAAAAAAAPA/8kALjh1XXOU/s320/090428-the-most-expensive-handbag-09.jpg
If you clicked this link in Friday’s post, you already know what I splurge and save on. If you didn’t, here it is:

SPLURGE: Jeans and handbags
Really great jeans wear well so they last longer. (I’m still wearing a pair of Joe’s Jeans I bought in 2003.) I also splurge on handbags. My rationale: I take the subway instead of owning a car, so my handbag is the “vehicle” for my notebooks, magazines, umbrella, lunch, and often my laptop. I’d rather buy one $400 bag and have it forever than have to keep replacing junky ones.

SAVE: Wardrobe staples
A $15 white T-shirt fits me just as well as a super-expensive one.

I wanted to ask you guys what you splurge and save on when I was trying to figure out my own answer, but I thought that would be cheating. Now that I came up with my own answer, you can tell me!

Do you spend more on certain items: Top-notch makeup? Shoes? Designer furniture? A fancy-pants car? And is there something your friends pay big bucks for that you get on the cheap?

I’m curious to see how you all shop!

Definitely agree with the splurging on the jeans! They make a world of difference. Not to crazy about a $400 handbag though. Might go up to $100 if I had the extra cash which doesn't happen often :(

I rarely splurge on anything because styles and fashion change so rapidly. I invest in good quality shoes because I know many women much younger than I am who already have painful bunions and serious foot problems. Cheap shoes will do that. Also, well made shoes do not require " breaking in".

A car is a personal asset and increases your net worth. Handbags dont do that. They actually increase your liabilities (decrease net worth) because youre probably paying for it with a credit card.

I think the fact that Kim is riding the subway is great. I would ride one, too, if there was one in my area. I think it's perfectly fine to spend 400.00 on a good bag that will last decades. I know several people who own Coach bags that cost 300.00-400.00 and they have had them FOREVER. Think of all the money that Kim saves by riding the subway. Car payments, insurance, maintenance, gas, ect... all adds up very quickly so if you want to splurge on a 400.00 bag once a year then go for it. You are probably coming out ahead of all the others who have high car payments.

Sorry Dayra B, but a car doesn't increase your net worth, it's the fastes depriciating expense we as humans own...you want to increase assets and net worth, buy property. As for shopping habits however...

I do handbags, jeans, certain types of shoes (the classics) and fine jewelry. All of these things tend to be for the most part timeless (exception is a super trendy pair of shoes, like gladiator heals that are so in style these days, but wont be for long), so you can wear them season after season. When it comes to dresses, shirts, "costume jewelry" etc. I spend MUCH less because that type of fashion changes so abruptly from season to season it's not worth spending tons of cash.

In the past 4 - 5 years I haven't purchased anything! Well, as far as designer accessories, clothing, and furniture... Don't need to. I was taught years ago from older women I worked with you're better investing in something that will last vs. an inexpensive item you'll need to replace repeatedly. They'd tell me "it's not the quantity but the quality." They were right.

It took me years of saving on the side but finally I was able to afford a quality, well made sofa that has lasted me 22 years and still looks awesome. Haven't needed to replace my cushions yet. And I had a set of professional slipcovers that also have held up. My designer furniture pieces many have been gifts from my family. My bertoia diamond chair one of my fav's was given to me 4 years ago by my husband. My daughter also purchased a few pieces for me in the past. I urged them not buy me anything else since I'd rather purchase used. I have few pieces of furniture but they're well made. Some pieces are more show others are laid back comfy I inherited from my family. I purchased inexpensive slipcovers which are a bit loose but they look great.

My clothing and accessories are the same. I've haven't purchased clothing in the past couple of years. Perhaps some tees (inexpensive.) I've gone back to the old fashion ways of shopping - thrift. You save and get great pieces.

Kim, I'm glad as well you're using mass transit. I wish more people would because we'd doing so much more for our environment. Plus that walk to the bus or train is actually good for you as well. Great Post!

I usually splurge on makeup and hair products! I lov MAC cosmetics and it can get pretty pricey and also Nioxin hair products. When it comes to clothes and shoes I try to budget a bit more.

I spluge on shoes and makeup mostly. Everything in my closet is jeans and t shirts, so their easy to mix and match. I dont buy anything fancy because they do go out of style every season. the only thing i sorta go spluge during the summer time is summer dresses and fake jewerlies from claires etc. But i wear them for the summer only. As far as for furnitures and things. I rather buy an expensive piece of furniture that will last a long time, everything from walmart and ikea sorta breaks down after a few years. I recently bought a 1200.00 vacumm cleaner, because i had gone through 3 vacumms within 4 years.
