Who can you turn to for help?

Have you ever known someone who was ready for so much help that their family was considering assisted living or, heaven forbid, a nursing home?  Well those are the concerns of most of the people who find us.  It is a sad day when you realize that your mother or father cannot do what they used to do.  This was the person who raised you, the one you looked up to for so many years, the person who taught you how to be responsible and to care for yourself.   Now you are watching them struggle with normal activities of daily living.  This makes some people so disheartened that they make the decision to institutionalize their loved one. It is done with love because, of the high level of care that their parent needs now, they often believe that their parent will be better off.  But deep down it sometimes has more to do with "out of sight, out of mind" and thinking about saving a few dollars.

Many times family members will hire us to visit their parents in nursing homes to give their loved ones a little more one-on-one time.  That is a wonderful gift and it is at these times that I visit and hear other nursing home residents calling out for help.  How sad it is to see these lonely people in the halls and bedrooms reaching out to be acknowledged, and when I do stop to say hello to them each time I see the gratitude and joy they exhibit from just that minimal amount of attention.

The good news is families now have options. Home care agencies are opening their doors to serve clients for as little as two hours a day or up to 24 hour care. Comfort Keepers in Kalamazoo, MI (and surrounding counties) helps families stay independent at home where they are happiest.  We assist our clients in all activities of daily living with as little as taking them to the grocery store, cooking and cleaning up to the more extensive care of assistance with bathing and dressing as well as Hospice care with bed bound individuals.  We make it possible to truly remain at home comfortably. The options are yours.

We are most concerned with helping our clients to stay active in their life and their community.  We explore our client's interests, what makes them happiest, what used to be their hobbies and goals, and then we work from there using Interactive Caregiving (which means we do with them not just for them) to help our clients to find value and meaning in their life again and to help them to find joy not just existence.  It is getting more common for our clients that are failing in health to improve and need less and less help.  It is amazing, really, to see the difference attention can make in someone’s life.  We have had two hospice clients go off of hospice just this year after having extensive care with us.  These are the cases I find so rewarding to lose hours with.

We are here for you and your family 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Our practice is to hire only people we would want to be in our homes and with our parents, which is why we are quickly becoming known for having the best caregivers.  Comfort Keepers employs dependable, caring professionals who have been thoroughly screened, formally trained, bonded and insured.

We provide a wide range of non-medical, in-home services, which are tailored to meet the needs of each individual client.  Some of our services include:

  • Personal Care Services (Bathing, Incontinence Care, Medication Reminders, etc.)
  • Incidental Transportation (Trips for physician appointments, lab work, etc.)
  • Meal Preparation
  • Light Housekeeping (including laundry and linen washing)
  • Errand Services (pharmacy, etc.) and Grocery Shopping

Who can you turn to for help?

Read what one of our client’s families has to say:

"We could not have asked for more loving and capable helpers to....keep our mom as healthy and comfortable as possible....Your dedication, knowledge, and assistance have been deeply appreciated."

With gratitude,
The R Family
