Why aren't they ponying up?

With the current financial crisis and our government giving out money to everyone but the tax payers, I would like this question answered: Our elected officials, especially the ones running for President, have more money than most of us could ever hope to accumulate; why aren't they forgoing one or two month's salary to help our country out?

Take Barack Obama for example: He collected $9 million in just one night....he couldn't write a check for a small percentage of that to the American People?

John McCain is no different, he has made millions and millions of dollars in campaign donations. I think he should step up too.

These two candidates could garner HUGE political PR by donating a small (in comparison to the total) amount of their campaign funds to releif organizations that are strained to the breaking point with these last two hurricanes. Or they could write checks to the government directly.

I know there are probably some hoops to jump through, but My God.....the Amercan People are tapped out with gas costing around $4 a gallon and a gallon of milk costing at least that much. Why can't our elected officials give to the country they claim to love so much when their very own constituents are struggling so?

b/c that would be the logical, humane, sensitive, un-political thing to do!

no good comes from politics. or haven't we learned this yet???

you DO make a good point, but, sadly, it will never happen.

They can only use campaign money for campaigning. The Campaign Reform Committee keeps a very careful watch on where that money goes.

Actually, most politicians do support charities that , in turn, assist Americans in numerous ways. Also, look at what the Oprahs and Bill Gates and others have contributed at home and abroad. Many Hollywood stars are also activists, including Leo DiCaprio, Tea Lioni ( Unicef), Paul Newman, etc. What every American could do is place a few coins in the Salvation Army bucket the next time you see one. That would help tremendously. Ditto for the Red Cross, always the first responders world wide and at home.

Springtime: Ok, so campaign funds can not be used for anything other than campaigning. Point well taken. However, these people are wealthy and in the kind of way that affords them multi-million dollar homes. I am guessing they could cut a check from their personal bank account that would dwarf what any one of us could contribute.

My point is this: the political officials that should report to us have no concern for us and little concern for the country as a whole. There are some standout politicians that do everything for their constituency, but they are few and far between.

Our elected officials show a very callous disregard for their employers and a devout love for the lobbyists and special interests. The Senate is going to go home to their palatial homes and take a break while our economy is floundering. Great! Since they are not working, their paychecks should stay in the public's coffers to help defray the cost of these multi-billion dollar bail outs.
