Why You Should Start Your Own Business Now - And 6 Simple Steps To Do So

by Karin Manske

Our world is changing dramatically. Jobs are disappearing, whole industries are struggling or going under and people everywhere are wondering what to do next. How about you? How are you holding up in today's tough market?

While times of crisis can be unsettling, they also hold opportunities for transformation and change. Take the economy for example. Never before has it been easier to start a small business than today. If you have a product or service that you are passionate about, you can start building your own enterprise. It’s a great way of making yourself independent from the job market by doing something you love and getting paid doing it. The best thing yet, with today’s technology it is very, very easy. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Find a service or product that you are passionate about and develop a plan of action.
  2. Look for a mentor in the industry you are interested in. This can be through a blog, a seminar or a personal connection.
  3. Set up your business on the internet by creating a website and, most importantly, a blog.
  4. Start marketing your business by building a community and interacting with people on twitter, facebook and other relevant social websites and blogs. Create your fan base.
  5. Sell and deliver your product or service. If you did a good job at marketing, this step comes natural because people will want to buy from you.
  6. Serve, serve and serve your clients. Service is key to any good business and good service comes from treating your customers with kindness and respect. But most and foremost good service comes from you loving what you do and having a great time doing it!

While these steps are simplified, they are basically how you start any project.  As I said before, going into business has never been as easy. If you have a job, keep it. Start your project on the side, experiment, make your mistakes (hey, they happen), get your feet wet and find out what works. The internet, your personal network and the community online will provide you with the support you need.  Once your business generates profit, you can still decide whether you really need that job.

is this really a good time to start a business. Personalized product? I am a purse designer. Mostly from Blue jeans. They have gone over very well but are labor intensive and I never get $ as much as I put in. But it is something I love. I would rather make it simplified so everyone would be able to afford the desing they desire-like the "over the top" purses with jewels and fringe and appliques and lace.

I think that this just might help me some! I have just been back online in the last 6 months since 1999, after bad accident that took me out of the game. Now i'm coming back again and to try and make it again when it is so different now then.

    Thanks alot

Chris, maybe you can design one purse that's real easy to make, duplicate it and sell if for a good (lower) price, and your more up-scale, individualized bags you sell for a higher price. Good luck and thanks for reading!

Hi, I have tried for several years, different businesses, and finally found one that I am passionate about. It is very unique and has an awesome comp plan. Great for all different types of people...business professionals, non-professionals, and entrepreneurs. We are an online greeting card service that sends postcard & greeting cards, through the mail, right from your computer, for about a $1 a card & so much more! If you are interested in pursuing a business opportunity, I would like to suggest this one. I would like to personally invite everyone who may be interested, either in being an entrepreneur or just using our service to go and send out a FREE card on me! Best wishes to you in whatever you choose to do! Blessings...www.soctoyou.com

I have a business service company in S. E. Michigan. The service will save small business owners thousands of dollars a year using my portable/mobile office manager service. We cater to the business owner that only needs an office person a few hours a week and only charge them for the office clerical work that is required by them. Accounts payable, receivable, collections, typing, filing, phones, notary, etc... No over head, no insurance premium and no worry. We will get the job done! It's a great service!
