Four-day work week gains steam

Utah has become the first state to institute a mandatory four-day work week, according to a USA Today article.

"A good number of the states are encouraging their agencies and managers to offer a four-day work week whenever possible," said Leslie Scott, executive director of the National Association of State Personnel Directors.

The move is designed to save money and energy, and I suspect it will boost morale and possibly productivity. I know plenty of people who work in the private sector who long for this option!

Rising gas prices are making the four-day idea much more attractive across the board. Last week we asked Yahoo! HotJobs site visitors if they would be more productive if they had a four-day work week (40 hours). The result: 87% said yes, 13% said no (18,625 votes).

You may be able to negotiate for this perk with your employer, using the tips in this article. Your employer may also be more amenable to the idea as a way to ease the commuting burden.

I can't see my company going for it. They are so slow about embracing anything that is employee oriented. BUT if they did...I'm all for it. Even if they gave you the option of working from home one day a week would help.

Many large companies are now doing this... employees are on a rotating schedule and are off every other Friday. Those who are off every Friday must come in earlier and stay later during the other four days. This is a problem with Daycare for many moms. So while the idea makes sense and would save on gas and would also save workers' sanity and be less stressful, it still needs some tweaking.

I actually experienced that at my previous job. 10 hour shifts were not too bad. I agree that it does need tweaking. I'm hoping that the idea gets approval at my current job.

My job offered me the 10 hour work day so I can take off on Fridays. I declined. Ok so the idea of a 4 day work week is great but what about working 10 hours a day? I'm a mom of a teenager and I find it hard for me to keep an eye on his movements if I'm spending 10 hours working and 1 hour commuting each day to work! I agree with the other posters---this needs tweaking to be productive for working moms.

With three kids and one in high school, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Heck, I'd take a four-day-work-week in a heartbeat. I could use it to put in more time on my part-time job to pay for all the "frills" in my life ... like gasoline, food and tuition.

Why must one take a Friday off instead of another day when given a 10-hour schedule?

"I hear my bosses talking about what people are doing wrong but it seems to me it's more gossip than conversation. They praise people and when they leave talk bad about them. I overheard them talking about me today. I'm not sure how to handle it."
