Inspired by The Office: What is the most inappropriate thing a boss asked/told you to do?

NBC: The Office

NBC: The Office

NBC’s The Office was back in true Office form last night, thank goodness. Michael has split from Jan (that story line was going nowhere but nasty, sad and abusive), so he is back to his rude, ignorant and inappropriate best. Just the way we love him.

And why do we love him? Because at one point or another, we’ve all had a boss just like him. Am I right?

Last night’s episode hinged on Michael once again stepping far over the supervisor/subordinate boundary and asking, nay demanding, his office workers to do something terribly inappropriate: find him someone to date.

He hands out index cards, “love cards,” telling each of them to write down the name of an “eligible woman for me to date by the end of the day. No by the end of the HOUR.”

To which Dwight responds: “Write legibly, people.”

So, does this top anything a boss has asked you to do? Today’s vent: What is the most inappropriate unrelated-to-work thing a boss asked you to do?

(By the way, I'm not the only one who's happy to have The Office back on the air. Check out Annette's excellent homage to some favorite moments on past episodes of The Office and 30 Rock.)

I once had a Boss if he caught you standing around and not working he made his emplyees go around the baseboards with a toothbrush. I felt that was so deaming to any human being, that I quit. The whole point you go to work to work not clean house. If I wanted to clean all day I would stay home and clean my own house. Also, people in High Management jobs think they are above any employee and forget what it is like to be a grunt worker.

When my boss took his son on a trip to Washington DC the kid was supposed to do a report on his trip. After they returned he asked me to do research on the White House for the report. I was pissed...what a waste of my time! What really got me is that his wife was a SAHM, why couldn't she do her her sons homework?!

Well when I turned 21 my boss wanted to take me out and buy me my first legal drink. I thought that was slightly inappropriate of him.

My ex-boss would want me to be her therapist & get all of my work done in a timely manner. I have my own personal problems. I don't have time to do my work and figure out yours. sheesh!

My old boss wanted me to always lie to others that she was "working from home."

She's send me 2 e-mails and the "disappeared" the rest of the day. Then she'd always call and say she was going somewhere to visit clients....and then one day she asked me to mapquest the address to the client because she had a meeting there.....guess she forgot she told (lied) to me that she was going there there all those other times before....otherwise she wouldn't have needed the address so badly, right? Caught her in a blatant lie and she didn't even know it.

    Yeppers, I quit.

well its not as bad as being in the military. We cant quit no matter what. We just have to do whatever the higher Staff NCO orders us to do. I am an embarker, which is an Aircraft Load Planner. Tell me where does cleaning the office, and cleaning bathrooms tie in with Aircrafts?

Long, long ago I had a boss who liked to be on committees and then try to have me perform the tasks she took on.

The one that sticks out was sending some kind of letter out. No biggie except they all had to be specific to the person. Now, this was back in 1992 so things aren't quite as evolved as they are now. Especially printers. So I was doing my own job, doing the time tracking she insisted on having (in 15 minute increments no less) and then trying to mail merge and print a couple of hundred documents.

By the time that they all got printed the dates on them were out of whack and she almost had a stroke. And there wasn't enough time to re-do them. She ended up with a non-personalized one that was photocopied.

And strangely enough I never got assigned any of her committee tasks again.

Note - not too long after that she got assigned to 'Special Projects'. For those not in the know that's the job you get when they want you to quit. She did.

These stories I am reading seem very clean ... and that tells me that things have gotten a little better in the work place as far as sexual harassment.

I will keep the DIRTY sad but true boss related confessions to myself ... and having said that you all know what I am talking about.

I was young ... I worked for the Illinois House of Representatives ... Springfield, IL is a small town and good jobs are hard to find.

I often thought of writing a novel ... Legislative Affairs would be the title ... that would be the only good that came out of that horrible time in my life. I ended up quitting and moving to the big city of Chicago only to work in the rock and roll industry .... NEED I SAY MORE?

I hope times have changed ... I am 43 now ... I am a stay at home mom and I don't have to play the sex game to keep my job ... both jobs were great and there was no shortage of bimbos willing to play ball for my job!

This was good ... talking about it .... only my husband knows the truth about this topic ... not my mother, not my best friends! That was part of the problem in the 80's .... everyone was on coke and booze ... and no one said a word about the abuse ... it was put out or get out!

    Thank you for listening.

My boss had me pick up his dry cleaning...not my job, and I'm sure he never asked any male employee.

I've picked up cleaning, had cars washed, picked up sick kids from school and taken them home - the whole gambit. Usually, I did not mind because I generally liked my bosses.

But I had one who liked to cross the line - and one evening I was supposed to go over a report with him before he left for a gala. So he comes into the outer office where I worked with NO SHIRT on and his pants unbuttoned, and asks me to step into his office to go over this report while he finishes changing into his suit for the event. Of course I declined, to which he actually said, come on, you've been married, it's not like you haven't seen a man before!! The nerve!

I tendered my resignation shortly after that.
