Shine Money Poll: Are you steering clear of airports?

It's been a crazy few weeks for the airline industry, and for airline travelers. American Airlines is back on track after canceling 3,300 flights last week because of FAA safety inspections, delaying and stranding tens of thousands of travelers.

This week brings news that Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines will merge, and thousands of airline employees will lose their jobs as airlines grapple with rising fuel prices. Contintental and United are in preliminary talks to do the same if the Delta/Northwest merger goes through. Pilots are not happy about how they will fare with a merger, so expect a bumpy road ahead.

It's enough to make you check out the bus schedule as an option. Okay, maybe not, but I've had extraordinary good luck traveling lately, so I am glad there are no trips scheduled in the next month. But with the summer travel season coming fast, I'll be back at the airport, at least once with my kids, and holding my breath that we get where we're going on time, and safely.

So for this week's Shine Money Poll, here are a few airline travel questions to field:

  • Have you been stranded at an airport lately, and how well did the airline handle your delay/cancellation?
  • Are you reluctant to fly this summer because of the changes in the airline industry and/or the cost of air fares? Or...
  • Do all these crazy changes have no effect on your travel plans and your faith that you will get to where you want to go on time?

-I fly Southwest as much as I possibly can. I've never had a flight delayed more than 30 minutes in the past 2 years with them, and I've never had a flight canceled with them either. I've always been very pleased with them. It's the airports that I usually have problems with.

As far as flying this summer, I'm sticking to Southwest. I rack up free roundtrip flights with them often because I fly with them about every 3 to 6 weeks. Air fares haven't been an issue with me YET. I'm hoping that Southwest will NOT merge with any other airlines. We need competition in that market. We need choices, and that means more than 2 or 3 different airlines to choose from.

I'm confident in Southwest. Like I said before, a lot of the scheduling and being "on time" has to do with the airports too. Nashville International Airport runs very smoothly. There is plenty of parking, the kiosks and check-in's run pretty fast, and getting through security this past year has been a breeze!! I LOVE traveling, and I don't see my traveling plans changing hardly at all this summer and months to follow.

Just like you, Dory, we'll be heading to the airport with our fingers crossed, hoping for the best. It's just one of those things you have to do...

It's certainly more of a dent in the pocketbook, but it won't affect my plans overall. I also fly Southwest all the time and am confident in them as my airline carrier.

I had a close call with delay and almost getting bumped from a United Airlines flight out of Dulles International within the past month. I had done everything by the book to schedule my flights, deal with security, get to the airport in plenty of time, etc. I did not understand the coding on my tickets and did not know that I had purchased standby status for the final leg of my trip, until I got to Dulles on my way home. As far as I was concerned, I had paid for a service and it was up to the airlines to provide the service ... which they did, but just barely, in my case. One person with a reserved seat failed to show up and because of that opening I was allowed as the last passenger on the plane. That experience was too close for comfort and evidence to me that the airline system is just spread too thin ... I will not be choosing to travel by air unless absolutely necessary!

I was delayed for hours back in the middle of March flying from Dallas to Austin (yeah, I know it's only a 4 hour drive) on American because of ... wait for it ... an engine warning light. We got to hang out on the runway waiting for the fire trucks to come out and make sure our brakes weren't on fire. Talk about exciting!

I'm sure the warning had NOTHING to do with the wiring that wasn't properly inspected. The sad thing is I have to take another trip at the end of May and am booked on American.

I would love to avoid air travel, but unfortunately, I have no choice. I can't even remember the last time I had a flight that left on time. Still, I've landed safely every time, and that's the most important thing.

Me and my husband fly a lot since we have family in many different states in the USA. It is just annoying having to wait for a delay flight with an infant or a toddler, specially trying to keep up with their feeding schedules. It is just crazy!

I work from home and I make a great income, it is so easy and profitable http://www.freewebs.com/makinmoneyathome/index.htm
