This year, the CFDA Fashion Awards (the fashion world’s Oscars) were held at the Alice Tully Hall.
The night’s big winners were the Rodarte girls, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, for Women’ Wear Designer of the Year, Calvin Klein’s Italo Zucchelli and Band of Outsiders’ Scott Sternberg, who were both tied for Menswear Designer of the Year, and the Proenza Schouler boys Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez for Accessory Designer of the Year. I found this interesting, since I own a handful of the duo’s shoes and find every one of them to be painful!
Perennial favorite Alexander Wang took home the Swarovski Award for Women’s Wear, while Tim Hamilton took home the same award for Menswear. The Swarovski Award for Accessory Design went to Justin Giunta for Subversive Jewelry and, unsurprisingly, fashion’s darling Marc Jacobs took home the International Award for his much lauded work for Louis Vuitton.
The Board of Directors’ Special Tribute was awarded this year to First Lady Michelle Obama, who has created quiet the fashion buzz since President Obama took office, with her daily outfits being scrutinized and tracked by the media.
Ralph Lauren won the first Popular Vote award, while Anna Sui was honored with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. Sui was so nervous about giving her speech she said that she felt like a kid who didn’t do her homework and that she was going to rely “on those presidential teleprompters.”
Lastly, the Eugenia Sheppard Award and Eleanor Lambert Award
were awarded to Women’s Wear Daily editor-in-chief Ed Nardoza and
GQ’s Jim Moore, respectively.
