align="left" height="242" width="400">The nominees for the 81st
Academy Awards were announced this morning and there were a few
surprises and many expected announcements. First up, we wanted
"WALL-E" in the Best Picture category, but
it'll have to take Best Animated Film instead.
"The Dark Knight" was also noticeably absent from
this category. Hmph. We've got a feeling the Golden Globe
winning "Slumdog Millionaire" will win the
evening's biggest prize anyways. Clint Eastwood and his
film "Gran Torino" were snubbed as well, but we
didn't completely love the film, so we can deal with that.

We also assumed Kate Winslet would be nominated
for "Revolutionary Road," the film for which she
won her Best Actress Golden Globe, but she is nominated in the
category for "The Reader," and we won't
get greedy. We do wish Leonardo DiCaprio would've landed a
nomination as well. He's a superb actor and has yet to take
home a statue!

Touchingly, Heath Ledger was
nominated for his portrayal of the Joker in "The Dark
Knight" exactly on the one year anniversary of his death.
And yes, both components of Brangelina are nominated.

Hugh Jackman will emcee the event on February
22, but until then, tell us who you want to win and who
you're totally peeved wasn't even nominated.

I was glad to see Anne Hathaway finally getting material worth a nomination. Also, Brangelina did very well on their films but I'm kinda sure it's still not going to be their night. Leo DiCaprio was surprisingly unnoticed this year, but from Blood Diamond to The Departed, he's definitely on the right trail to the statue very soon. Clint Eastwood might said that he would be retiring after Gran Torino, but hopefully not out of spite. He is one of the greatest icons in the industry. Overall, the nominations were OK. The academy is soooo unfazed by whatever the other award giving body's line up of winners.

I am so weary of Brad and Angelina. They are not the only talented actors on the planets. Bring on Hathaway or Winslet and Hoffman or Rourke.

OK, so first of all, I haven't seen most of these movies and hadn't even heard of half of them until the nominees came out yesterday; however, I assume they were nominated for their greatness rather than for their popularity.
I hate the word "snubbed" when used to refer to award shows like these. The academy is not overlooking so and so because they don't like him personally. They aren't saying, "Yeah, well, she looked terrible in that red dress I saw her in a few months ago, and I think her hair extensions are hideous, so I'm not voting for her." If they decide not to nominate Reese Witherspoon this year, it's not because they're "snubbing" her, it's because somewhere out there is a better actress, someone who portrayed her character in an more amazing way. Why can't people understand this, rather than looking at those who were left out with pity and despair for the sorrow they MUST be feeling for being "snubbed" by the academy?
Anyway, sorry about my rant. I hope Heath Ledger wins too, because I like him and because he portrayed The Joker so well that I would not have even guessed it was him under all that makeup if I didn't already know. He gave the performance of his life, and I hope the nominators agree that it was a better performance than that of any other actor this past year. BUT, it will not be a "touching" gesture if he wins. I don't want him to win because people feel bad that he died. I don't want them to just hand him the award at the expense of someone who possibly might have done a better job in portraying a different character. I want him to win because he deserved it, because he earned it. How did you arrive at the adverb "touchingly," Jen? That really doesn't give him any credit for his achievements, you know.
The only movie on the entire list that I actually watched was "Dark Knight," but, from seeing the preview of "Changeling," I can say that I think Angelina did a good job in that.

I don't think that there are any movies on the best film list that I would call good. There's nothing like Lord of the Rings or any film close to it. It's all artsy fartsy that gets nominated. It's just too bad that horro, scifi, and fantasy gets panned.

I really hope that Heath and Mickey Rourke get awards for their performances. Well deserved, in my opinion.

Angelina Jolie should have been shunned by the Oscars this year. Come on there were so many other actresses whose performances were far more deserving than hers...
