Az. Diamondbacks...Still in First Place!

First Place Diamondbacks Still Holding On

                 How Long Will It Last?

Two weeks ago the Arizona Diamondbacks were a dominate force. The sky was blue. Birds were singing. Keeping at least one win above the trailing, Los Angeles Dodgers, the future was looking very bright. Eventually, the Diamondbacks were able to pull away from L.A. by three games. First place and 3 games ahead of the rest of the division. A most comfortable position to be in as the regular season is nearly over. Hopefully, the D-backs will be able to hang on just a little longer.

It is amazing. Keeping up with the progress of the Los Angeles Dodgers (they are still trailing the D-backs by 3 games and have just lost their last 5 games), it makes one wonder why the Diamondbacks aren't leading by, at least, 6 games. Are the D-backs comfortable with their current position? Staying just above .500 wins, why are the Az. Diamondbacks even in first place?

To add to the amazement, the Dodgers were swept by the rising Colorado Rockies. The Rockies are in third place in the division and are only two games behind the Dodgers. Colorado is also on a 4 game winning streak. Arizona still has a lot of work to do.

Watching last nights 9-2 loss against the lowly San Diego Padres, I felt nothing but disappointment for the D-backs. With Brandon Webb on the mound and pitching for his 20th win of the season, last night's game should have been a lock. The Diamondbacks should have easily won last nights game, as well as the series. San Diego defeated the No.1 D-backs and won the series. Disappointing? Very.

It is a cloudy day in Phoenix, Arizona with rain in the forecast, at least, until tomorrow. Are the Diamondbacks capable of weathering the storm? Can the "Snakes" right this ship and sail through the season and into the post season?

They definitely have the talent. The Arizona Diamondbacks, along with head coach Bob Melvin, are not a team to reckon with. The main problem, I feel, is hitting. If they can just get those bats going again, the D-backs will start winning again. Stretching the lead and keeping them in first place throughout the remainder of the season and into the play-offs. -Michael L. Wilson
