Celebs faux modesty: What’s up with saying they slept through Oscar nomination announcements?

I don’t know about you, but if I were nominated for an Academy Award I would set my alarm and wake up early to watch the live announcements. Really, I’m the Entertainment Editor of a website and I still woke up early to watch them and blog about it! Which is why I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that the actors and actresses who claim they had no idea they were nominated until their mom called them and woke them up, or they found out from the clerk at their local grocery store or whatever were completely full of it.

Marisa Tomei, who already has a best supporting actress Oscar collecting dust from 1992’s “My Cousin Vinny,” claimed “I was dead asleep, and I didn't know why the phone was ringing,” when the Golden Globe noms were announced, so we really don’t believe her when she says she snoozed through this more significant broadcast.

Sure, at this point, we wouldn't expect, say, Meryl Streep to lose any sleep over an Oscar nomination (she's been nomination a record 15 times), but just look at newcomer Anne Hathaway, who earned a best actress nod for "Rachel Getting Married." She says she wanted to sleep, but the excitement and anxiety got to her way too much. This is a genuine response: “I didn’t want to get ahead of myself and wanted to guard against being disappointed," says Hathaway. "I tried to be very cool and sleep through it. I got in from Washington, D.C., and decided to spend the night at my parents’ apartment and had anxiety dreams all night, getting up every hour. At 8:30 we were all sitting on the couch. I think my parents cheered louder than anyone.”

And now here are a batch of quotes from nominees all saying they hit snooze and found out later on in the day through someone else. Let us know in the comments which ones you think are faking it. Oh, and for the record, Eric Roth, who is nominated for best adapted screenplay for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” insists, “Anybody who tells you they were sleeping is a liar.” [Hollywood Reporter][Variety]

“The best thing is that it was my best friend from New York who called and told me. She was so happy, she was crying and I’m like, ‘What has happened?” — Marisa Tomei, supporting actress, The Wrestler

“It’s delightfully surprising. I had no expectations. A very close friend called me, as I had no idea it was televised." — Melissa Leo, actress, Frozen River

“It’s weird, a big surprise. You learn not to have expectations. My son-in-law called and then the phone started ringing." — Richard Jenkins, actor, The Visitor

“I was at a midnight screening last night here at Sundance and was up until 3 a.m. I was sound asleep and then a little shell-shocked when the calls started coming in." — Michael Shannon, supporting actor, Revolutionary Road

“I was sleeping, because that’s my technique, and I just got it on my phone when I turned it on. — Gus Van Sant, director, Milk

“I was awoken by the news. I’m in New York, but a late riser." — Martin McDonagh, original screenplay, In Bruges

"I'm a nocturnal worker so because of that I go to sleep with all my phones turned off. I saw a text message saying `congratulations' and I wrote back asking `for what?' True to form for me, I thought the Oscar nominations were tomorrow.'' — Danny Elfman, original score, Milk

I think Michael Shannon is telling the truth. Excitement or not, if I went to sleep at 3 in the morning, i would not be awake a 8 or 9 in the morning just to see if i was nominated. he'd definitely hear about it later anyway.

Um. . they are celebrities. Many of them are on the party circuit or working until dawn everyday. They aren't in bed between 10 pm and midnight like most people.

I think Oscar nominations are televised about 9 am or so. So it's entirely possible many of them were asleep when the nominations were announced.

I think Michael Shannon is saying the truth. He was working until 3am. I think even if he wanted to stay up to watch the announcements, he would've fallen asleep from fatigue.

Maybe all celebrities aren't as egotistical and full of it as you make them out to be. Obviously they live normal lives to some degree and aren't as self-centered as you may make them appear.

I think they are all fake - just be honest and say you couldn't sleep!
