Clinton, Obama, and McCain on WWE, Bush on "Deal or No Deal"? - Idiocracy suddenly isn't so idiotic

I did more than a double-take yesterday when I saw a video clip that was supposed to show our presidential candidates on WWE's RAW. The clip showed Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John McCain talking trash as if they were WWE superstars. At first I was impressed with the quality of the obviously fake clips, but then the reality set in. After doing a little extra fact checking (okay, website checking) I discovered that the candidates were in fact scheduled to appear on that night's show. Granted, they had done this earlier on Amercan Idol, but on WWE (Professional Wrestling)?

As I was double-checking the WWE appearance, I discovered that President Bush was also schedule for prime-time that night -- on Deal or No Deal. I didn't bother to double check this story since I was reading it in the Hollywood Reporter.

Sitting back a little, I'd have to admit that you can reach a very large portion of America through these two shows (three if you count the American Idol appearances). But just because you can do it, does that make it really right? At first I felt like I was living in "Demolition Man" (although Arnold was president in that one). But then a co-worker pointed out that more people these days would be more familiar with "Idiocracy". And I had to to admit that the dumbing down of the population in that movie seemed more suitable for how I'm feeling about this country these days....
