Dear NBC's "Today Show"....

Normally I'm a fan of "The Today Show," but today I am disgusted. You call it "Green Week," yet the amount of dollars your organization has spent to highlight the locations of discussion has to be outrageous. The fuel you've paid for to get your staff to all the locations, coupled with the fuel you're using in helicopters to get bird's eye views views of the areas must cost millions. Real "green," huh?

Not to mention, Ann Curry's segment with the troubled school is Tanzania... they need several thousand dollars to keep the school alive... how about one of your overpaid staffers donate (what would be a drop in the bucket to Matt or Meredith) to this dying school?

I'm a firm believer of bringing awareness to causes, but when it costs more money to raise awareness than it does to fix certain issues, I say shame on NBC for this.

I will gladly go "green" this week and forever... by shutting off my TV and not watching your hypocritical "effort."

AMEN and amen! You are ahead of your time and right on time! I, too, thought the obvious yesterday when the show began. It's true the amount of resources and money spent on the production costs alone this week for Today I'm sure are astronomical, and a detriment to the environment. It's true it's a mass undertaking and it may all be worth it if it causes millions of people to wake up and make a difference, but I can't help but think they could have gone about it a different way.

I don't watch the show, but I certainly agree with your sentiments. My mom has done non profit work for as long as I can remember and she always says that to figure out who to donate to, figure out what percentage of what you donate goes directly to the cause. Something tells me that the cost of showing the school and paying celeb personalities to report on it, was more than the cost of just fixing the school, ergo, an unwise decision on money spent.

Green is the newest media chic topic and you are right on target with your comments. I'm equally disgusted with the 'compassionate' profiles of people struggling with economic hardships while they are interviewed by some TV person wearing clothes and jewelry that cost more than a month's worth of groceries. I stopped watching the Today show years ago; finding out from superkate that Kathy Lee is on the show moves it to the forever never list.

I second the AMEN! The lavish promotion via excessive on-location shoots is disgusting. I find the Today Show's hosts' interviews at these destinations patronizing and condescending with uber-fake compassion. As the audience does reach millions for issues of true awareness, they could have accomplished this goal via more economical and green ways.

PS_And, yes, please rid the world of Kathy Lee.

I stopped watching morning TV ages ago. I can watch the weather on one of the all - weather digital channles, and I get my news here on the internet. Actually, except for PBS documentaries, I don't watch TV at all anymore! The BS they hand you on those so-called "news" shows is innane. I don't give a damn about the latest over-priced fasion trends when I have to shop at Walmart for my clothes, and I hate it when they start talking about the latest sex trends while my kids are eating breakfast. I also find it funny that they will be preaching the "green" mantra and then an ad comes on for some oil company or something!

Meh, this whole green guilt thing is overrated anyway. If you want to be really enviormentally conscience you would have to not only turn off the TV but also your computer, lights, electrical appliances (including the fridge) stop driving your car, cell phone, turn off the heat and or AC.

But your arguement about the press (which the Today Show is technically) reporting on enviormental issues instead of using the money for the report on the subject is not a logical one. Reporting on a crisis, a school in this case, should in theory generate a higher amount of charity than if it was not. I know the tv anchors get paid plenty but you cannot expect them to donated to every cause they find, much like the average person cannot. On location reporting also shows the public the seriousness of the problem, while lets say a written report cannot convey the same emotions as you get with pictures. It also "proves" their is a actual cause which is a benefit as people are justifiably wary of giving money to things they cannot see. While you can say the fuel costs might be a waste to get to a remote location you have to remember in many underdeveloped countries roads do not exist or are in a horrid state so air travel is the only way to get to a location efficently, it also happens in our own country in remote locations like Alaska.

Well let me say something about this. I'm 40 years old. I have 4 children 2 of them are still at home and I'm retired. I used to work for 3 busy attorney as a legal secretary for years. I finally had enough. I saved enough money and decided it was time for me to slow done. Now I manage apartments. I only go to the office to collect rents and take care of maintenance requests 2 days a week...I reside in the complex for free. I make enough money to pay my bills and the rest of the time I spend with my family. It's really nice...I don't worry about car payments. In fact I don't even own a car now. I ride a bike, and so do my children. When I need to drive some place I call one of my two adult children. Hmm...I think that I'm in that place in my life where I just needed to lighten my load and take a early retirement...I think the same thing goes for celebrities. They just get so tired of making movies and being away from their loved ones...

Wow, thanks for the props!! I never watch morning TV, but I was laid off two weeks ago. The fact that I am living off my 4 tiny weeks of severance and unemployment (which I've yet to see a check for) probably just adds salt to the wound with regard to this topic. Ann Curry can bite me, as can Kathy Lee. What a waste of time and space, as I sit here job hunting and wondering the future of my unborn baby, they're rolling in their paychecks for doing NOTHING and spending huge amounts of money...
