    Dear i.,

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. But why didn't you say something like, "I'm afraid it's past my bedtime, and I need to get to sleep."

I understand you did not want to be rude but as I see it they were being rude so you needed to speak up. That is of course unless you were just chatting away with them, laughing, eating, watching the movie like there was no tomorrow. If that's the case then you led them to believe it was ok that they were there and you have no one to blame for the late night but yourself. Rethink what went on and then maybe next time you can handle it differently. Just some food for thought. Sometimes we can't see what we've done until someone else points it out. I mean no offense to you. Peace.

Honesty is the best policy- when you thought it was time for them to depart , say something like I am glad we got to see you but it is high time for me to go to sleep- sometimes people just dont know they have worn out their welcome until you tell them in a nice way- that way you do not have to deal with your bad feelings after the event is over,
