Have you ever interviewed for a position that you weren’t sure what the job entailed? Have you ever asked the question, “What do you see as a typical day in this position” during the interview? If so, did you get an answer that you wanted to hear? I asked that question a couple times, and the responses varied from major attitude to plain out lying.
Currently, given the era of the “freelance” knowledge workers who often change jobs/careers over time, adults are utilizing the old profession of internships just as college students. Based on your situation, you could offer companies low cost/free help (weeknights or weekends) while you get the chance to truly experience a day in the life of your targeted career.
Another option is to attend meetings/events for professional organizations for careers that you are interested in. For example, although my background is engineering, I somehow became interested in the marketing profession. I visited an event hosted by the Connecticut chapter of the American Marketing Association. It was really cool because we had the marketing manager for a local baseball team present to our group. This gentleman was known as one of the top performing professionals in Connecticut. I was able to network and get to know a number of marketing professionals.
To find out about some of the associations out there, you can

Also, another great source is your local library – reference
librarians are one the world’s best-kept secrets. Try it out,
and good luck!
