I have joked about being an "old grandma" since the birth of my granddaughter Gracie five years ago.
I don't use a regular grandmother name like Grandma, Granny, Maw-Maw, Mi-mi, Ma-Mere, or Nanna. My grandmother name stems back to a time about twenty-five years ago when I was a young mother.
A family member had an adorable s---zu name Kimmie. As soon as I heard that name I thought... Hey - that can be my grandmother name when and if I ever have grandchildren. I never forgot that and so now - that's what my granddaughter calls me.
It's funny though, she's just starting to realize that I am her grandmother. I used to ask her (when she was three and four) the names of all the people in her family. Like; "Who is Charlotte?" (Mommy) and "Who is Daddy? (Nick)... but when it came to the question of "Who am I?" she would reply, "You're my Kimmie." Hearing her say that just made me smile from ear to ear. She's right I am her Kimmie and I love being HER Kimmie.

Report AbuseI am 56, have had grey since 35, while my children were small and in there teens, I color my hair still today, in a matter of fact last Thursday, August 13, 2009. My Mother is 77 and she still color;s her hair. We both are proud of it. I have a son 40 going on 41 years old, one 38 and one just turn 30 and I have 3 grandaugthers and 1 grandson and three step-grandaugthers and one step-grandson. I only have sons no girl was born to me, and that is only because God knew what he blessed me with, because I was a tom-boy when I was young. Not get side track, but my older son told me one day when I was 45 that to act my age, and I ask him how do a number act? show me how the numbers 4 and 5=45 act? Of course he could not answer, so I politely saidm that just because our physical body from within deteriots, but as long as you keep and active young mind and keep doing and learning all things new and think out of the box and meet other ethinic group of nationalty, and not stereo type individual, and be proud of being a 56 sexy year old grandmother. i work partime and still can dance and have been told by the younger women, that I look like I'm 35 yrs old. I love who I am and will always be who I am. Lady's it is about our own self esteem and being comfortable and acceptenace of the beautiful creatures that we are, both inside and out. We had let men brow beat us on what type women they like but mind yourselves don't alow them to take away your identity. stay strong be proud for us that do dye or don't dye their hair. When my husband and I got married, he told me he should of married some one fat and ugly, and I told him I could be that by gaining 72lbs of water weith from 128 to 190ilbs and no take out my partials, let my hair go and be slum looking with no problem. and I told him the only reason why men want women to look like that is because, that gives them an excuse to cheat on his wife with some tall , long legged, malnourish, muscels as hard as men, maybeline cosmetics, Frederick of Hollywood Manaquin, and catclawed nails, with either synthetic hair or horse tail hair, but never there own.
So I ask my husband, what kind of wife did he want one that was 275lbs like his mom or some one who so watch her weight for my own health not for to catch a man, and always as my father and mother taught me, keep up your apperance even if you are taking out the garbage to the curb.
He got very quite and it never was brought up again. He was worried that I would be big like his mother, and I said oh Heck No, not in this or any other life time. Now, When I am reasy to go gray, it will be completely white not salt and pepper. Every person do not look right with all grey, but we are so vain and we should not be, but who said that we had to be grey, there are no laws that said we had to be, It is by an indiviual choice. I love being called Grand-ma, grand-mother or Mom, what ever it is just a name and you won't run other men away with that tile, it would have to be our attitude that keeps people away
So Grey haired grand-mothers, be proud we have earned these titles while the younger generation still have to get though life lessons to learn just as we had to and we are still learning, we don't stop until we no longer exist her on this earth, then we graduate to move on.
