Shine is committed to the fight against this terrible disease, and we're proud to tell you about a special Yahoo! for Good campaign in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. During the month of October, you can go to the Breast Cancer Awareness page (http://shine.yahoo.com/page/breast-cancer-awareness-2009) to change your status message to one in support of the fight against breast cancer that will be seen across all of Yahoo!. For every user who updates, Yahoo! will donate $1 to help uninsured women get free mammograms. We'll have the page up all month, displaying a map of Yahoo! users from around the world helping the cause. Let's raise money and awareness!
Do you have a breast-cancer story of your own? Shine wants to hear your experiences -- the triumphs and tragedies, messages of hope, and anything else you want to share. Shine will be featuring community content on the Breast Cancer Awareness, just below that map of updates.
Change your status, write about your experiences, and help us support Breast Cancer Awareness!

A Wonderful Post to have another resource for awareness of this cause.
I have been fortunate to have been healthy in this area.
Regular Mammagrams are vital.
My Mother is a survivor of Breast Cancer.
She is an active member of several functions in Maui, Hi.
That support and raise money for Breast Cancer.
Will look for the URL.

186,467 women and 1,764 men were diagnosed with breast cancer.*†

Report AbuseI was going to let everyone know that breast cancer can also attack men, but I see that Dolphin has beat me to it. Good work on that info, Dolphin.
Brenda, every time I hear about someone who fought hard to live against some kind of cancer, but died just the same, it makes me so very sad. And it scares me. My heart sinks, because I can see by these stories my own almost certain future (now that I am probably going to lose my health care insurance).
Your aunt's fate moves me to tears and fears. Also, the deaths of that lovely sweet woman, Farrah Faucett, and that good kind man, Patrick Swayze, are wake-up calls to me, that I had better milk every moment of whatever I can get out of my remaining time, because my days and my moments are numbered.
Now, I have some comments on breat cancer.
Breast cancer is commonly caused by gene mutations:
BRCA-1 and BRCA-2.
(The mutations in turn are caused by a host of factors, some known, and some unknown.)
The same mutations cause ovarian cancer.
It has now been learned that these mutations also cause men's prostate cancer to be very agressive and highly malignant; they do not seem to be the cause of the prostate cancer; but when there is prostate cancer, they cause it to be agressive.
There are clinical trials going on right now for breast cancer victims, using something called PARP-1 inhibitors which can greatly enhance the effects of radiation and chemotherapy and bring about many more permanent cures.
The last I heard, they are denying this life-saving new adjuvant modality to ovarian cancer victims and to prostate cancer victims. People are being treated like lab rats.
In other words, if you have breast cancer, then are the lab rat they want to experiment with right now, by providing you with this treament that so often turns into a complete cure. But if you have ovarian or prostate cancer, then you are among the lab rats that they have decided to let die now. When they get around to having clinical trials for ovarian and prostate cancer victims, though many of those alive now will be dead then, there will be fresh new human lab rats developing these cancers, for them to experiment on by giving them this wonderufly life-saving modality.
At some point in time, PARP-1 inhibitors will be available to prostate cancer victims and ovarian cancer victims, but I don't know when. Anyone who has those kinds of cancer should ask their doctors about PARP-1 inhibitors right away, and ask to be kept posted about it. And then, keep asking from time to time, in case they fail to keep you posted.
PARP-1 is the little b------ that brings cancer cells, dying from radiation or chemotherapy, back to life to kill you. The inhibitors stop them from doing this, bringing about real cures in many of the clinical trial cases.
Cancer of any kind, when it is terminal, is one of the worst things that can ever happen to a human being. The treatments themselves are a disease of their own, if not outright torture.
My whole heart embraces with compassionate love all of the victims of every kind of cancer. God bless all of them--God bless us all--and help cures be found and developed, perhaps even one cure for all kinds and stages of cancer. Kill this killer.

Report AbuseBrenda I have known many and still do including myself who have struggled and still are with this deadly disease and I have writen a poem on the subject(imagine that) and i would like to leave it here because you have more readers than me and I cant get into chatter much these days anyway. I hope it can change the outlooks of some people when they see a cause as great as this . thank you..................................................................................................................................................PINK RIBBONS.......................................................................With every pack of cigarettes he bought,
he'd dismiss them on the shelf.
a rare disease, wont happen to me,
it's always someone else.
pink ribbon why should he care?
he's still in his prime.
all those adds are just to scare,
till she come home one night and crying.
milignant mass and spreading fast,
the doctor says it's bad.
then pink ribbons was all he seen,
through the tears he had.
they prayed and gave and she was saved,
the masectomy a success.
and he hasnt smoked from that one day,
and the store has no ribbons left.

Report AbuseBrenda, I saw a harrowing tale on the news about the male survivors of breast cancer, all of them at one time or another at Camp LeJeune. Some are old, some are young, same diagnosis. Quite eye-opening, knowing that breast cancer not only affects women. I support you in this all the way. Just let me know what I can do.
Thank you, Brenda! GirlyGirl ♥

Report AbuseDolphin, Poet, and GirlyGirl,
Thank you for reminding us that breast cancer is indiscriminate and also affects males. It's a fact that needs attention and support too!
