Is Shine biased?

Never before, in the history of Shine, have I seen a subject create such prolonged heated discussion as the GOP vice presidential nomination of Sarah Palin!

While I've been fascinated with the intelligent and respectful levels of discussion taking place, I was taken aback to come across comments accusing Shine of being a biased site.  One Shine user commented, "I'm getting a little sick of SHINE'S narrow minded views on Palin. If you can't say anything nice......I guess we know how the SHINE writers feel about her."

For the record, the editors really try hard NOT to have a bias. It's true they are raising questions women have about Sarah Palin but they don't want users getting the wrong impression that these questions signal a favor, one way or another.

Remember, we have all differing opinions on Shine. We have posts written by Shine editors, partners from top women magazines, and users like you. We’re working to make it clearer who is writing the post, and I'll update you on when that's complete, but if you feel an opinion isn't covered we want you to blog about it! Because on Shine, we want to make sure all opinions are covered. So tell the community where you stand on the upcoming elections and help us keep this great conversation going!

Op/Eds in all major newspapers have that same problem . When a reader disagrees with a post, they often cry " sexism" or " bias". It 's a knee jerk reaction. I do not believe Shine is biased at all. And if the writers also have an opinion, why not present it? It's a women's forum and all opinions in good taste should be considered and accepted.

I agree with springtime. I haven't been insulted by the articles or topics of discussion that appear on the site — just the backlash from readers who take other people's opinions way too seriously.

Sarah Palin's camp has accused the media of being "liberal," "sexist," and biased against her. However, this is standard republican schtick. Palin's camp is not citing specific examples of this liberal, sexist, bias, but only making general references as though this is simply understood and accepted by all. It is not.

Although Shine employs a staff, it invites writers from a wide array of publications to post content here. Shine also promotes user generated content. Not every writer has a political agenda. Not all those that do are liberal.

If anything, public opinion polls show that conservative ideals are not as strongly supported among the American people in general as they once were. The war has become increasingly unpopular, Bush has a very low approval rating, and we have a democraticly controlled congress. It only stands to reason that more people voicing opinions at this time will seem to have a more moderate, or what conservatives refer to as liberal, vent. This is hardly Shine's fault.

How is Shine biased? They pose questions, users leave responses. There are just desperate people trying to come up with excuses and cop-outs that can't accept the fact that most people don't like her.

Over these past several years, there is a strange phenomena that has happened. Part of it is that there is no longer as much of an unspoken 'agreement to disagree' as there was much more in the past. I've never chosen my friends on the basis of whether or not they agree with me and march in 'lock step' with my political beliefs or not. In addition, more and more you see far right people significantly up in arms whenever Republicans are held to accountability...and, now, with GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN as the VICE PRESIDENTIAL nominee they want 'kid gloves' to be used and 'hands off' criticizing PALIN for issues that she SHOULD be criticized about.

Why don't the ultra-conservative Republican PALIN supporters here on SHINE 'get it?' It's not SHINE saying the truth about PALIN, it's individuals around the country and the world that are watching more than just FOX TV to get their information and logging in to say what they think independent of SHINE. Surely these PALIN supporters don't want SHINE to CENSOR the posts that disagree with them....oh, but... maybe they do....maybe THAT's why they like GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN so much because as much as they say that it is a 'liberal lie' it IS TRUE that WASILLA MAYOR SARAH PALIN DID try to get books banned in her WASILLA PUBLIC LIBRARY. The 200 book list that was put 'out there' WAS A LIE made up by who knows who....but that's not what I'm talking about. PALIN tried to get some books banned and when the librarian would not do it then PALIN fired her....that's been substantiated and documented.....then PALIN hired her back and then later the librarian quit.

There are all kinds of reasons that PALIN is not qualified to be VICE PRESIDENT and potentially PRESIDENT but one reason that is overwhelmingly more significant than so many others and that is her COMPLETE LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN FOREIGN RELATIONS and despite PALIN saying so.....being able to see RUSSIA from her back yard in ALASKA is just NOT ENOUGH!!!!! How utterly ridiculous. And the 'snippy' answer that she gave KATIE COURIC as to why she had only gotten a passport 1 1/2 years ago was ridiculous. She sniped that she hadn't come from an affluent family that could send her to Europe but instead had to work TWO JOBS! Well, that was a long time ago and given the fact that she's been living well and she and her husband earning significant money for sometime now that would have allowed foreign travel and, especially, considering her desire to be in government should have 'mandated' that she get out and travel around the world to truly educate herself on who and what the world is all about instead of 'just reading about it.'

Enough crying FOUL and SEXISM when PALIN is called on the carpet for not knowing answers to questions that she SHOULD KNOW!!! Male candidates would be RAKED OVER THE COALS if they couldn't answer things that she hasn't been able to. Telling KATIE COURIC, "I'll get back to ya!" when asked specifics about how McCAIN is a REFORMER...their MANTRA! UNBELIEVABLE!!! Her interviews with COURIC and GIBSON show how totally unqualified this woman is for being VICE PRESIDENT or PRESIDENT. It's scary how unqualified she is.

I absolutely believe that the whole McCAIN thing of 'ducking the debate' had ulterior motives...one to derail the BIDEN - PAULIN debate by needing to replace it with the OBAMA - McCAIN debate but OBAMA 'didn't bite.' Now, I'm wondering whether or not this whole thing going on with the ultra-right conservatives voting against the BAIL OUT is actually being done purposefully so that McCAIN...the MAVERICK and the REFORMER....can also be the HEALER and that the White Knight can ride in on his horse and kick start this BAIL OUT into a reality by the time the BIEDEN - PALIN debate starts Thursday night. The way the ultra-conservative right wing marches together in 'lock step' spewing the party line makes me think that 'something is rotten in Denmark'....well, in this case D.C..

It's THE MOST PATHETIC thing I've seen in my life...what the BUSH-CHENEY administration and the Republican Party have done to this country in 8 years. It's sickening the 'rape & pillage' that's gone on and STILL the voters that voted them in haven't seen them for who and what they really are. BUSH - CHENEY have all but destroyed this country. If the people that have supported them would get their heads out of FOX NEWS all of the time and start watching a variety of all of the news on television as well as reading a variety of all of the newspapers and magazines reporting then would have a much more balanced idea of what's going on. They kid themselves into believing that FOX is 'fair and balanced' news reporting!!! OMG!!! My children knew better when they were in the 4th grade and I'm not kidding! All it takes is an intelligent brain that doesn't limit itself being told just one thing by one avenue of information. That's like living during HITLER'S NAZI regime or other dictatorships where the only 'truth' is the dictator's point of view.

Too bad KATIE COURIC or CAMPBELL BROWN won't be the moderator for the BIDEN - PALIN debate but GWEN IFILL is someone whom has shown herself to be strong and tough so I hope that she will ask good, strong questions and will not allow 'pandering' to replace good, substantive answers.

I'm sorry to see this happening with a woman candidate, personally, because SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON is such an intelligent woman and such an exceptional debater. But all women were NOT created DEBATE EQUALS....unfortunately! I wish that GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN was the FORMIDABLE candidate that so many have tried to make her out to be. If she were then I'd be totally behind her bid for the VICE PRESIDENCY regardless of whether or not I was personally going to vote for her....but she's not, sadly. SENATOR KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON would have been or SECRETARY CONDOLEEZA RICE would have been. I wouldn't, personally, have voted for them but I do respect their intelligence and their being extremely well informed on this issues and they both WOULD have been FORMIDABLE opponents. The pick of GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN should have been viewed by all for it was....a slap in the face of women....they took a 'pretty face' yet once again over the most intelligent woman suited for the job....how many times has THAT happened to the majority of women in this country and in the world.

SENATOR McCAIN has done GOVERNOR PALIN a great injustice putting her into this position at this time but even more importantly he's done a great injustice to this nation and this world. He should have chosen a woman that was worthy of the position and worthy of the spotlight and worthy of being THE FIRST WOMAN VICE PRESIDENT but McCAIN just doesn't get IT....he doesn't get all the reasons why his choice was so profoundly important.

It's not JUST about a woman getting into office simply becaus SHE is a WOMAN. Number one...it's about how qualified she is and how good snd strong her heart is for working for the people and how dedicated she is to serving her nation and the world....and it's about all of the girls and women of this nation who haven't yet been given equal footing in this country and the message that her presence at the helm of this country represents to them. It's also important to all females around the world to finally see a woman as VICE PRESIDENT or PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA....the LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD because it gives hope to them that ONE DAY their world will be more equal. In AFGHANISTAN and the CONGO and in other third world nations where young girls and women endure the most hideous forms of SEXISM and TORTURE and DESPAIR....the election of a woman as one of the top two leaders of this nation means the world.
