Kanye West: Live performance falls short of his cocky persona

The public has a real love/hate relationship with Kanye West, the rapper/producer/blogger who has taken both the music industry and pop culture by storm over the past several years. Known as an extremely cocky and arrogant dude who made public tirades at the Grammys, the American Music Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards after not winning statues. My own father was text messaging me during his most recent appearance at the American Music Awards, ranting about how obnoxious and full of himself Kanye is that it overshadows any talent he may have.

As a music lover and appreciator of all genres, I try to overlook the extreme personalities of music creators and take their product at face value. I’m a fan of Kanye’s new album, "808s & Heartbreak," particularly his latest single, “Heartless,” despite the fact that the album overall gets a little redundant by the end. He is, after all, innovative, creative, and one who speaks his mind, and I see great importance in those qualities.

After watching Kanye’s live performances from this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” I have to take my admiration of the artist down several notches though. Seriously… what the heck was that! Everyone has an off night, and many performers flub on the program's live format, but his off-key vocals, which were strained and screechy left me feeling like "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, uttering out loud that it sounded like a horrid karaoke performance.

Kanye may be able to produce, write good songs, make aesthetically pleasing videos, have an eye for fashion and blog things we all think but don’t want to say, but can the man sing? I’m not so sure anymore. Technical problems aside, West’s performance was still dreadful, and made me assume every other time I've seen him on stage he's been lip-synching. I couldn’t even sit through the entirety of either song—and coming from a man as cocky as Kanye, that’s not a good thing.

Take a look at Kanye's "SNL" performances of "Heartless" and "Love Lockdown". Do you think Kanye is all that, or do you think he should keep his mouth shut and fall back for a while?

I am NOT a fan of "K-Pain"'s (a la T-Pain) latest CD. One of my friends said it best: if he's so heartbroken over the ending of his engagement and the death of his mother, TAKE SOME TIME OFF, MAN! Besides, he's the one who said "It's a thousand you's/it's only one of me!" If that's true, Kanye, go find another one of the thousand, and stop depressing us with your redundantly depressing lyrics!

I didn't see SNL, however, when I first heard the miserable love song, I was hoping he would take a step back, however, the maniacally narcissistic side of him LOVES the spotlight too much. I agree, take a break Kanye. It'll be alright - -You need to BREATHE.

I didn't see him on the show (I fell asleep, but I would have channel surfed anyway) but I wasn't surprised to hear he flooped. I've never understood the attraction anyway. When I've seen him on other live shows, there is so much background noice and distraction, you can't relaly hear him sing anyway. He's WAY over-rated.

Kanye West is a remarkable lyricist the songs which make up his new album have been involved in much controversy. The songs potray a darker side of him that his numerous fans have never heard. I applaud him for the "unique" sound he created with the help of the synthesizer, not only did it add to the songs effects it also let us understand why he is an ECLECTIC artist in which ever genre of music you wish to place him. If you have any doubts of the rawness of his passion for music listen to the bonus track at the end of 808s & Heartbreak- Pinnochio Story says it all. qod is loveeee.

i think kanye is just having hard times right now and by changing his musi he is expressing how he feels more and he just does as much as he can inside the label

Kanye needs some "me time". I don't mean the usual stuck on himself time. I mean like some time to truly heal time.

The songs were both interesting. They would have been great sung by someone else. I even liked his dancing, but I agree with Douglas.. the vocal quality was poor.

First, I'll just say that I think Kanye West is an arrogant jerk. Still, I can't deny that I like a few of his songs. However, I didn't like either of the songs he did on SNL, and I kept asking myself, "Does he really sound bad right now, or is it just me?"

Glad to know it wasn't just me. Then again, at least he performed live.
