Movie "Tropic Thunder" underfire over use of the word "retard".

user

First there was a problem with Robert Downey Jr. playing a black man. Now the mentally retarded community are up in arms because the word retarded was used in some excess of fifteen times in the movie. When and where should writers draw the line not to offend consumers. CNN is covering the protest and a guy actually got in front of the camera and said, "They only used the n - word one time." Does it make it better if they say that in excess of fifteen times because you can go as far back as a Huck Finn movie and get the word " ----- " to satisfy your urge to hear it. Now maybe I took what the man said out of context and he did not mean it quite the way it came out, but this goes to show that no matter what is said or what is done, someone is going to have a problem with it.

Damn right people are going to have a problem with it. Some people lack the mental ability to see humor in a movie. Some people lack the knowledge of where to draw the line. And some people are just plain ignorant, stupid,or uptight. Movies are suppose to be for entertainment, not a reason to start a fight because of what, who, or where you are.

I agree with Jack in some ways, but in others, I don't. I think that, sadly, people are more affected by movies than anything else these days. I also have a son with a slight disability (he's not retarded, but still...) and I'd hate to see his disability waved around for dumb idiots to scoff at.
