Movies turned musicals: Is “Waiting For Guffman” Broadway bound?

IMDB

IMDB

Though Broadway may be suffering a little during the economic crisis, there’s no question that musicals themselves are back stronger than ever. The “High School Musical” franchise has popularized the medium with a new generation while recent films based on musicals such as "Moulin Rouge!," "Chicago," "Phantom of the Opera," "Dreamgirls," "Hairspray," "Sweeney Todd" and "Mamma Mia!" have made theater more universally accessible.

"The Producers," "Spamalot," "Hairspray," "Legally Blonde," "Billy Elliot", "The Color Purple," "Young Frankenstein," "Shrek," "The Little Mermaid," and the forthcoming "9 to 5" all thrived as movies prior to hitting the stage. And we’re happy to announce one of our favorite movies, “Waiting for Guffman,” the 1996 cult mockumentary about the making of a musical, may be heading to Broadway soon! Even better? It may star the original cast of Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, Bob Balaban and director/star Christopher Guest.

We’re crossing our fingers that this adaptation comes to fruition in the near future. In the meantime, what are your favorite movie musicals and which movie would you love to see make its way to Broadway?

Also, if you’re unfamiliar or if you’ve seen it 100 times, we urge you to watch our favorite scene from “Waiting for Guffman”: Ron and Sheila Albertson's audition for “Red, White and Blaine.” [EW]

Did we officially run out of original material for Broadway theatre? Where are the "A Chorus Line", "Company","Les Miserables", "The Sound of Music" and "Miss Saigons" of this generation. Oh yeah, we don't invest in original theatre because its too risky. We need safe garbage produced by safe hollywood types so we do not offend the tourists from the Midwest.

And yes I realize Les Miserables and Miss Saigon are based on previous works.

I have loved this movie since i first seen it, and since i live in missouri and just giggle when they show a small town. It's a very funny and amusing movie that i am sure can be turned into a show. SInce most of it is about a show itself

For those of us that are not in New York, why should we care what comes to Broadway? I still want to see Wicked. I'm not a fan of this post and it's been up here forever.
